I drive a beater 5 speed 04 civic, and when I'm off the gas and in gear, I can just pop it into neutral without engaging the clutch.

Is it totaled?

Is it? I have no idea.

I always thought you had to engage the clutch before shifting anywhere.

I've driven 5 manual cars now and they all went back into neutral without clutching

Nope. You can execute clutchless shifting in a transmission with synchros quite easily.

For that matter, you don't need synchros to shift without a clutch, it's just... a lot more finicky.

It's all about the revmatch. I wasn't talking about automagics... (though they have a clutch too, just not one that requires human intervention.)

Used to do it all the time in the old army jeeps. With enough practice you could drive all day without touching the clutch (other than to stop/start moving of course) and never grind or hesitate once. Now, if you missed the rev match...

I was driving a tractor trailer for a guy for a while and we only used the clutch to start and stop. Otherwise it was gas, release, and then drop it into the nexr gear. It would pretty much just fall right in at the right rpm. It was a ten speed. Five gears then flip the pattle and there was five more. Going back to one (six) at 50mph is kinda scary!

I find the prices of shift knobs for our cars to be infuriating.

I bought a Hurst ( a well respected brand that also makes short shifters) knob for my mustang a few years ago. It was well weighted, had a good finish with a brand engraving and it cost me $30 bucks. Just saw the prices for Raceseng and can't believe it.
