Well yea, did the 2x4 method on my 1970 jeep gladiator, but the solid axle 4x4 closed knuckle truck had only one adjustment. Adjust toe with a pipe wrench.

I liked it better than trying to eyeball because I could measure things and use numbers and stuff. When I try to eyeball things I'm never happy. I'll think to myself, "this looks close, but what if I tweak that. Oh, that's worse. I'll go back to before. Damnit! That's not what I had before." and it's just a viscous never ending cycle that'll keep me in the garage all night... |

It is popular amongst racers. I’ve never seen someone tape the string to the car like that though. Typically people use two equal length pipes, one at the front and one at the rear with the strings at the ends of the pipe. Then to square up the box you measure from the centerline of the car. I’ve seen race teams with permanent mounts at the front and rear of the car for their alignment rigs so they don’t have to square it up every time. I’ve used neon green fishing line as my string. It’s lighter than actual string so it’s easier to pull taut. It also helps to have something under the wheels that allows them to move and settle in when making adjustments. I’ve used stacks of laminate wood with lubrication between them so they slide easily. |
