With my daily commute being about 60kms one-way and it being 98% highway, it's hard for me to avoid having to keep it at a constant RPM. I just alternate cruising between 5th and 6th going 110km/h but mostly stay in 6th. I hope I don't do anything that will be detrimental to the performance of the vehicle.

Can anyone tell me what will happen if you improperly break-in the engine? Will the engine eat through more oil its its entire lifetime or what?

Drive it like you stole it. get some cylinder pressure happening to push the rings out and grab them walls. That is the ONLY thing that pushes rings out to wear into the walls.

Then let it cool completely overnight, do an oil change, then do it a few times next day. No *****footing. These are not hydraulic flat tapet cams of yesteryear domestics.

Basically heat, cool, heat, cool, broken in.

I got the BRZ about 2 weeks ago, i have about 150miles (mostly city and some highway so far) I have read many things about breaking periods and stuff like that but im not sure whats right or wrong.

I never had a brand new car before, either way im just keeping it under 4k and ocassionally hitting 5-6k (very rarely)... Also at the same time im learning how to drive stick and its going pretty well.. I guess when i hit the 1k i can rev up to 7,4k to shift?

Wow this thread goes way back.. I acutally did a dyno comparison and the car picked up about 3-6whp after the break in period. I know there are tons of varialables but given a similar ambient temp and same car with 0 mods.. it was spot it. The secret.. non, just drive the car normally, dont baby it and dont go around redlining every chance you get. These things are meant to be driven, after all it is a new car. Supposedly ive read that what helps seal the rings is load.. meaning give it gas in higher gears at low RPM's and allow the car to decelerate in gear from 4-5k down. Other than than trust me.. you'll be fine. I even did an oil analysis afterwards and all was perfect. I'll see if you could find the post. The less you worry about it the better it'll be for you and the car. Just thing about how many people buy cars and just drive, its us enthusiasts that worry about the extra 1hp. Have fun and you have all the data you need below.

See post # 8&9, the dyno sheets aren't there but the different was 6whp.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...ighlight=break

And the oil analysis results after that break in..

Thanks for the advice..

I have also considering changing the oil the very first time after hitting 1k.. and then change the oil every 3k miles ? (when i had my celica i change the oil every 3k miles so im thinking on doing the same thing for the brz )

How often you change your oil? i will be driving the BRZ 60 miles round trip for work per week.

I change it every 6-7k using full synthetic. Based on the oil analysis i did with the Mobil 1 Blackstone labs the car would be perfectly happy using 6-7k intervals and this was city/traffic driving.. same could go for you. If you feel better changing at 3 that'll be fine but you could save a bit of money and the analysis shows you're safe to do so.

Ok, it just odd for me, im use to change my oil every 3k on my celica (my celica is old 177k on it) compared to the BRZ it's brand new to i guess they need less intervals of oil change.. I just want to keep the engine healthy you know..

Im going to change it at 1k (just an case for the breaking period) and then just change it every 5-6k interval...

Yeah before the standard was 3k but now days most cars go a full year without a change. Toyota(subaru) uses 7.5k intervals.. if in doubt check your manual its got a list of exactly when you should do it even based on driving conditions and locations

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1339039433

Around page 35-40 you'll see the maintenance schedule.

I broke in my car 'like I stole it' chasing my son in his new STi Launch edition through the Rocky Mountains for three days putting 600 miles on the car. Then I went back to dealer and had them change the oil before driving 950 miles back to Texas.

Old school guy here in S Texas changing synthetic M1 5-30 oil every 3K miles or so.

Drive it like you stole it. Then change the factory fill after 1,500 miles, I think I remember reading people change early.

Not sure if it's been posted http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Why is he changing the oil every 3k? Does he have blackstone results that indicate he's wearing that oil out THAT fast?

I'm seeing as much as 6.5-7.5k per oil change is normal using M1 from oil analysis results posted here regularly. I could give you links if wanted

EDIT - refer:
