I am rethinking handling. This weekend I went mountain biking. On the way back I took some mountain twisties in my WRX and I was behind a fire truck going to a fire call. He was hammering those blind curves. That thing handled way better than I thought it would.

This. I've driven behind fire/emergency trucks up and down Angeles Crest Hwy and they know their vehicles and the roads intimately.

And he must have had 2 jobs, firefighter, and still working at his fathers Tofu shop. And thus he had to do both at the same time because he was late on his tofu delivery and it overlapped with his firefighting shift. That or the firetruck driver had the Eurobeat blasting |

It's called weight transfer. Good drivers know how to take advantage.

On the way back down I had a firmer grasp on the road so I was going at a brisker pace, I left the dam to a deserted road and ate up the first straightish bits in the 140-160km/h range. Once I hit the more twisty bits I still kept a good pace, way faster than when going up, but still with safety margin in place, staying in my lane, not eating up the double yellow, etc. I soon got caught up by a toyota highlander, which passed me on a double yellow and vanished after a few corners. WTF some time later, another highlander (slightly newer) caught up and passed me, again on a double yellow between blind corners. I thought I'd keep up this time and see what the locals were doing. The first thing I learned is, there is no double yellow, it's racing line all the way going edge to edge of the pavement, low visibility or not. I was keeping up with the highlander going track mode while staying in my lane with safety margin. Then a Corolla, 2005~ish body, showed up in my mirror and soon passed us both on the double yellow between blind corners, and again, soon vanished after a handful of corners. At that point I thought screw this, who needs handling when you've got stupid :lol |

Handling is not strictly about performance. Top gear did a ‘best handling car ever’ thing a long time ago. 1st place was the Ferrari 575, 2nd place was the Peugeot 106. Handling is about how the car makes you feel when cornering, not necessarily how fast it can take that corner.
