The new one uses a 6mt. It hits 60mph on the 2nd gear tho.

So I am curious - the point was made that there is an advantage to having a non-front mounted inter cooler because you don't get a bunch of rocks, debree, etc. all up in your shit. So, is it just too much money for these aftermarket FI kits to create a top mounted intercooler like the one on the 2015 WRX as seen below?

Lastly, would anyone agree that the 2015 WRX can be used as a benchmark for FI builds on the 86 in the near future? i.e. '15 WRX has a 10.6:1 CR, turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16-valve flat-4, aluminum block and heads, direct fuel injection, etc, etc

That's actually not the reason. You can easily prevent that by having a grill in front of the intercooler (which every OEM front mount application comes with). Rather, the advantage of a top mounted intercooler is that you require next to zero plumbing of intercooler piping and thus suffer very little turbo lag (compared to a FMIC set up). Additionally, it's easier to design a top mount instead of a front mount when taking crash standards into consideration.

To sum up, a top mount is superior because:
-fewer parts
-less lag
-no designing around crash standards

But in the aftermarket world, is this just never considered in a FI kit/build? I just find it odd that no one has created an aftermarket top-mounted version being that is seems way more compact + the superior points you made on top of that. (no pun intended :P ) (at least I have not come across anything yet).

I dont think there is any space to do that, the OEM hood is very low

I guess its more of a hypothetical question, given that someone may might have an aftermarket hood-scoop hood. *shrugs*

Not exactly, the clearance of the engine from the ground is also very low. Therefore the manufacturer stated that there was no room for FI.

The way OEM is lay out, it makes impossible to mount turbo on the bottom and IC top.....

It's harder to sell aftermarket parts when you force the buyer to change his hood too. For example, you'll never see a lot of products in a store simply because the packaging takes up too much space. It has nothing to do with the merits of what is actually inside.

Plus FMIC is actually more efficient in doing its job of cooling and has lower CoG. Trade-offs.

There is definitely enough room on top of the BRZ's engine for a TMIC. I mean, for crying out loud, there's enough room for a positive displacement supercharger on top of the engine!

But in general yeah, nobody does aftermarket TMIC's because usually there isn't enough room above the engine, and most people don't want to replace their hoods either.

Man I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking a BRZ, 2012-2014 WRX hatch, or possibly the new 2015 WRX. I live in San Francisco though, where AWD isn't really necessary but would be cool to have.
