So I am curious - the point was made that there is an advantage to having a non-front mounted inter cooler because you don't get a bunch of rocks, debree, etc. all up in your shit. So, is it just too much money for these aftermarket FI kits to create a top mounted intercooler like the one on the 2015 WRX as seen below?
![]() Lastly, would anyone agree that the 2015 WRX can be used as a benchmark for FI builds on the 86 in the near future? i.e. '15 WRX has a 10.6:1 CR, turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 16-valve flat-4, aluminum block and heads, direct fuel injection, etc, etc |

To sum up, a top mount is superior because: -fewer parts -less lag -no designing around crash standards

But in the aftermarket world, is this just never considered in a FI kit/build? I just find it odd that no one has created an aftermarket top-mounted version being that is seems way more compact + the superior points you made on top of that. (no pun intended :P ) (at least I have not come across anything yet).

I guess its more of a hypothetical question, given that someone may might have an aftermarket hood-scoop hood. *shrugs*

Plus FMIC is actually more efficient in doing its job of cooling and has lower CoG. Trade-offs. |

![]() But in general yeah, nobody does aftermarket TMIC's because usually there isn't enough room above the engine, and most people don't want to replace their hoods either.

Man I'm in the same boat. I'm thinking a BRZ, 2012-2014 WRX hatch, or possibly the new 2015 WRX. I live in San Francisco though, where AWD isn't really necessary but would be cool to have.
