Altezza auto engine was basically tuned for lower-end torque/midrange power, probably to offset a) the torque converter's losses and b) people buying auto are less likely to be banging off redline shifts, and drive with the 'power under the curve. I just can't see it being too weak to handle 159 lb-ft.

Alternatively c) same problem as the rotary?

Maybe I will do some math later but I think shifting at 6500 should keep you right in the power band with a close ratio 6 speed, so it should be plenty torquey when driven properly. Of course this still all depends on the weight. 170lb/ft in a 2800 car would be pretty lame I think.
Uh what? What do you mean "we know it makes 170lb/ft at least from 4000 to 6500"? It looks like you're assuming power is constant, which is completely false.

this assumption by auto manufacturers annoys me... a properly designed auto can rival the DCTs and AMTs of the world...

if these assumptions show up in the FT, i'll instantly lose faith in this car...

I think it shows more that the guy who wrote the article has little clue about how engines work.

But I also think that it could hint at someone leaking the real BMEP number...

Peak torque is 170 at 4000 rpm. Peak hp is 210 at 6500rpm = 170lb/ft, meaning it is still making peak tq at that point. After that, tq falls off quickly, or else peak hp would be higher. Unless the torque dips in the middle and then comes back up (I don't think I've ever seen that), it will make 170 between those two RPMs.

Most guys on here don't want one because it takes headroom away which is vital to many of the guys who wear helmets and race. I personally want one and hope it is an option.

This.

I'd rather them sell an alternate convertible version for women and people going through mid-life crisis.

They have already planned an automatic version for that market.
