I'm trying to register my car and the dmv wants to see the title (neveda) but my dealership says they don't need it, Since the lienholder has it. I don't know what to do

How did you guys register your cars?

Try to talk to the finance people in the dealership. When I went to DMV they ask for the title too, I can only show DMV the little temp card from CO and they said not. End up walk away with a temp registration with title and smog pending. When I call my dealer finance people, they told me they will FedEx to the DMV. When my DMV gets it, they send me a little notice so I go back and finish it.

Me too, my car is financed, therefore, that piece of paper is out there.

yeah I don't remember the exact name of the paper but the finance dept at my dealer (Heuberger) sent me all the paperwork I needed to submit to the DMV... I think it might have been called certificate of origin. The only other things I needed were the smog cert and VIN verification which was done by the DMV employee.

Usually the dealer will submit the paperwork to their state, whom will then forward to the Dmv in California. And after a few weeks, you should receive a notice to register the vehicle along with instructions to bring along smog verification.

This is starting to get messy. Finally got a call back as requested from Sacramento. He's looked over the paperwork, said I'm short some $200, a form and the smog test. Said to expect a letter from them outlining this and to setup the DMV appointment for the missing items and the vehicle inspection.

Then, the local smog place has a hard time doing the smog on the BRZ since he is unfamiliar with where stuff are on a BRZ and that it is new seeing how they do mostly 6 year old cars. Took much longer than usual trying to find the emissions pieces but eventually did not charge me extra eventhough he should have.

Then I get to DMV on my appointment, the lady had a brief conversation with the supervisor. Poof, I'm at another desk receiving a Ca. temp permit for 2 months. I asked why but got vague answers that 'hopefully' I'll get something in the mail within 2 months. The other lady said something about them being backlogged and again, 'hopefully' they'll get to my paperwork soon. I taught they already got to it?? Something tells me I should have waited for the letter being that my car's info is not fully in their system yet. Nobody looked at my smog cert, my car nor ask for the $200. AND I still don't have plates.

I guess I'll have to pay DMV a revisit in a few weeks.

Take it easy, it will work out fine. I was enjoying my paper plate for a full 2 months on my rear window, I think it is cool looking.

Not me. I hate the paper plates; it just make my car stand out when I just want to blend in. I'm on my 2nd month with them now.

look on the bright side, you can run through red light camera intersections with impunity.

I'm still plateless in my 4th month... waiting for my custom plate to show up.

Did you guys get a temporary registration from the DMV when your CO paper expired (the one they put on your back window/rear plate)?

My DMV gives me that while register and pending for the title and smog, the woman said don't know how long for them to get the title so she put it until the end of 2012!

DMV fail! even though reg was ostensibly handled directly by out of state dealer (and DMV already has all my $$$), they won't register without a certificate of origin, which they think my lienholder has? must check with lienholder.

paperwork was supposedly already given to Sacramento DMV by mail, and I was purportedly in need only of a vin check and smog. vin checked, car smogged, but DMV won't do anything further until cert of origin is provided.

worst.

Finally got my DMV letter stating the missing form, smog and the $200 short. And a return call from the Processing unit about the 'delay' in getting my docs to microfiche (what, they still use that?) but that they're good now.

I managed another quick appointment and goes back to DMV. Appointment line is longer this time around and moves slower as well. Gets to the counter, lady says to get the car to the 'verification' line, get verified, park and come back in line. What! I just drove around and around to get a parking spot!

A hour later, I'm back in line, gets to an agent, she looks puzzled and consults with the supervisor. Again? I tell her all my docs are supposedly in Sacramento on microfiche. But I think all is good this time, she takes my check, smog, form and I get yet another Ca. temp permit. Yeah this time for 3 months. I hope they give me my plates before 3 months is up because I don't want to be near DMV for a while.
