Eh it didn't seem 'perfectly set up' for the tires you wanted to run, it would have needed new coilovers and alignment and an oil cooler and brakes along with your choice of wheels and tires, which you'd have to do to a bone stock car anyway so all you were getting for a steal is the budget header and tune (~$1k value) and a clean-ish chassis and a couple parts worth reselling for a few hundred bucks if you felt like putting in the effort.

Pick up the next cheap chassis you come across and buy those blingy parts

Sucks that your deal went South, but now that you've experienced it on track you understand exactly why so many people love this chassis despite all the hate it gets. There's basically nothing else even remotely as good in the price range except a Miata. I'm not sure what part of Texas you're in, but I see 2015s come up occasionally on CPO for $13-14k in this area, I'm guessing they're off of people that leased the car and their lease ran out during 2018. Considering the mods you wanted to do, buying it stock and modifying it might not be a bad idea. You can probably find a bone stock 2013 for $10-11k without much trouble if you look for it.

That $10k price was too good to be true.
I guarantee you he got a higher offer.
When you got the $10k price, you should have closed the deal with cash that same day.
Another case of "You snooze, you lose"

It's a friend of mine. I've known him personally. If he wanted more, he could have gotten more out of me to begin with. He wouldn't have given me a free track day (which is about half a set of tires)
Anyway, he came BACK saying his friend is backing out again but I think I found a different route I want to take.

It's a shame that other guy isn't buying it, he'd fit in with all the other flakey buyers in the Toyobaru community. haha

So this other route... do tell.

Gutted, caged (8pt) BRZ. 27k miles. (other one had 47k).

Pretty much everything. AP brakes, stance (?) coilovers, outstanding and overbuilt cooling system, whiteline bushings, OMP seat, 5pt harness, splitter, wing, sway bars, etc.
It's is more than what I wanted to spend, but I'm having trouble not buying it. I'll be at $17k with coilovers, brakes and cooling upgrades. Completely gutted- no ac, etc.

Not really sure which way I want to go, now that I think about it.
What's everyone's opinion on these two cars.

Curious as to everyone's thoughts on value here- assuming it's done well and clean.

Not what I would choose for suspension, how do you feel about tuning suspension or writing a $2k+ check to replace them with what you want?

http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/stan...l#.W9nsstVKj0N

$17k for a car that's gutted, caged, and cooled to your liking makes a bit of sense assuming you agree with how it was done and don't have to do it again but I'd expect more work needs to be done which will likely be the case with 99% of all 'prepared cars' out there. Hence the suggestion to just start with a cheap used one that's closer to stock. But hey, some of the magic of this chassis to me is that I can throw a set of tires in the back and drive it to the track and then drive it to work the next day, if you're set on gutting and caging the thing and trailering it there and back then by all means dive on in.

Lightest one I've heard of is ~2,300 lbs, <2,600 without losing creature comforts is doable (~2750 wet on the scales for a '13 FRS in my experience, first fifty pounds is losing the junk in the trunk) so you're looking at about 250 lbs lighter by gutting by my math.

I think he said it was 2550lbs. No AC but still has power windows.
As far as coilovers, they're not the best, but honestly, shocks don't make THAT big of a difference.
When my magnetic ride controller overheated and failed mid day, and I was riding on all 4 at their softest setting, I was < 1 second slower. That's going from an electronic, dynamic/on the fly suspension controller that adjusted every tenth of a second or something like that based on loads and acceleration, etc to having full soft. I definitely made some adjustments (and then more adjustments when I got a new one) but once I made them, I was fine.
If this was supposed to a super competitive race car, sure, there are many reasons to spend big bucks. But for HPDE, I'm not concerned.

What's the doorbar situation on an 86 with an 8 pt cage and the POWER WINDOWS INTACT look like? Younger more flexible people that I could swing it maybe, but I cringe at the spinal origami needed to get into an OMP WRC-R over a door bar that doesn't bump out LOL :P

Doesn't look like fun, but I'm short and kinda skinny. Shouldn't be a problem. I'm also going to get a removable wheel.

Gotcha. I'm 6.0', 215 lbs, and mangled up, bending isn't my forte. No removable wheel yet?!?! People would pay to see me attempt to get in it LOL
