Kinda makes sense to use a niche platform for introducing new and potentially polarizing technology applications. I guess the 86 will no longer be a purists vehicle which would explain the new design team.

Other than ichi's rather vague insinuations the whole idea is of course pure speculation. Unfortunately with the real info we have from Toyota these speculations would seem to make more sense than the "it will be a turboed FA24, lighter weight, hatchback".

Hi community, long time no see!
Long thread, didn't read thru.

Stumbled on this:

https://driving.ca/toyota/auto-news/...to-december-21

GR 86. This looks to be very plausible. Not sure if this has already been posted.

Need to at least go back and read from post #106.

Beyind the time line (which was "leaked" on here) Driving.ca and their "source" Motor1 are full of crap and have no real "leaked" info.

Motor1 and a lot of sites like it are just pure crap. They may get rumors right sometimes, but that's mostly what they run on - rumors. Then again, I'm pretty jaded on most automotive "journalism". Lots of clickbait.

They wrote a whole bunch of details that are most certainly not in the “leaked” Info https://i.imgur.com/pSvAAcN.png

A more serious suggestion, and they'll only be second-hand at this point - Genesis Coupe with the 3.8. Respectable power, RWD, and not terribly larger than a twin. I would say it's more on par with a Z car. It's a shame Hyundai decided to kill it off.
i tried the genesis coupe before going with the 86. i still like the styling and the bigger motor more. it drives like a 4 door luxury sedan. like wearing one of those inflatable sumo wrestler costumes. the steering wheel is mostly connected to what feels like the front wheels.

Since we're talking M/T and not changing the clutch mechanism, that would need a second motor in the form of belted alternator starter at slightly increased cost, but that works too. The benefit of that setup is better starting torque and less transmission wear.
