So I swapped the stock wheels and tires back on the car just to have fun without all the grip and I noticed the plastic hubcentric rings that came with my Enkeis thankfully didn't melt at the track. They did feel kinda brittle. I need to look for some aluminum rings or just run without them. Related thread

I believe if you bolt down the wheels in a star pattern, it somewhat negates the need for the rings.

On my TSWs I ran without the the plastic rings for DD for a week and I didn't notice any ill-effects.

Just this past winter in my 2011 WRX I bolted down some Enkei RS7 (?) wheels without hubcentric rings (I didn't even know what hubcentric rings were at the time) using stock lugs. Eventually my car started riding really rough, until the tire blew as I was pulling into a parking space. It took 5 months for this to happen:

So apparently you're either supposed to have the correct nuts for tightening down without the need for hubcentric rings or you should have hubcentric rings. I had never dealt with aftermarket wheels before, so it was all news to me. The funky ride quality started after about 3 1/2 months after I bought the wheels. I was completely clueless. After I sold the wheels I purchased plastic hubcentric rings to go with them since I sold them to a friend and they were going on his wife's Legacy sedan.

Nowadays I vote for both proper-fitting rings and lugs that will tighten down flush to the hub. I don't plan on getting any used aftermarket wheels, though. Either genuine Subaru wheels or new ones that'll be fitted with rings already.

@brzranger and @chanomatik: Not to get off topic, but I believe whenever you go with aftermarket wheels, you will almost ALWAYS need a hub centric ring. I got after market O.Z. rims for my Cobalt SS and they required hub centric rings even though they were the same size and offset as my OEM rims. Furthermore, when I was trying to get my wheels balance, they had an extremely hard time getting one of the wheels balances. Why? Hub centric ring was still on the rim instead of on my car's hub. Took the tech's 5 minutes to figure out why they couldn't get my wheel balanced. Scared the crap out of me because I thought I might have some how warped the entire rim.

Back at the OP: loving your ride man!

This is my favorite journal, keep up the good work, awesome action shots. I need to grow a pair and try the DIY tail lights. When I first saw the car a year ago that's the first thing I thought of that was needed.

I thought this, too, but I had several owners tell me they never used rings, only lugs, and they never had problems. I had my wheel re-balanced several times before the techs finally realized that I needed rings.

I 100% agree with you, but I just can't figure out how some people can "get away" with it while I couldn't.

You're right, though, it's OT, now! haha

Ugh, this car is so nice! I'm so debating the tail light mod, but I'm not sure I really want to go that route. I don't mind cutting them up, but I really want to try painting my tails red and then doing a night shade over that. We shall see.

The STI gurney flap gets me all emotional. It's so beautiful!

I would honestly have loved to get this done before deciding to cut mine open: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...=jjdrivesajazz

...but I don't know any good painters that I'd be willing to trust with it, and I wouldn't be happy with my own paint work as I never am.

I like your blacked tails, subtle and stock appearance. I'd do it myself, but no time.

I love your car man! So well done.
The Raijins look so pretty on this car! In your honest opinion, does an 18x8 remove any of the agility of the car? I'm so hesitant to go to an 18" wheel, but I love the look. Props for a very tasteful car sir.
