By keeping the spare tire, you're missing the opportunity to get rid of quite a bit of weight.

Hell, I drove my Miata for 88,000 miles with no spare tire, never had a flat ......

I'm thinking that the spare tire is too big to get forward of the back of the headrests ....... besides, he has a shirt in there to cushion the blow .......

I've used my spare in the past, though not with this car. It's a roll of the dice and I'm not much of a gambler. I have AAA and they [we actually] all carry a jack. It'd be a PITA waiting so long for light service to come out with a jack, but I have a spare, and it beats waiting for a tow truck. I also carry a plug kit and of course, there's the TPMS- I border on paranoid since that's what I do for a living.

Sooo, what point exactly are you minimizing the moment of inertia about?

That's exactly what I wanna do. Remove everything. I already took out the spare, trunk liner and all the tools and foam pads. Freed up about 35 lb. So how much weight did you remove in total you think?

I pulled my rears out too. If you remove the brackets and all that and put the bolts back it's about 27 lb by my scale. Rear panels are another pound and a half each as I recall. I left them in because the level of sound deadening you get for 3lb is pretty damn good. It's also much louder at 60mph+ from tire and wind noise. There's a component weight thread with exact numbers somewhere.
