Personal note: First time I sat in an FRS I noted the placement of it's hand brake was just perfect, like no other car I'd ever been in. Must
be they expect me to actually use it, and often.
When I got my first FRS (10 series) it took a good 5 drives including g some clutch stench until I was OK with driving it in the city. My last manual car was a Jeep TJ like 5 years ago so I was a little bit rusty.

I pull the handbrake until it doesn't roll back. Then I just leave it.

That's why all the clicks are there - for adjustment.

I've heard people who start learning manual for the first time often use the handbrake to hold as they aren't too familiar with where the clutch grabs or able to do it quickly and efficiently enough. But as they improve and get better, they then just do it like normal and transition quickly from the brake to clutch, getting to the bite point as quick as possible to prevent any downhill movement.

For me, I drive an automatic with a foot operated emergency brake, so I get to pretend I drive a manual and let out the emergency brake slowly like a clutch and if I ever mess up, the car doesn't roll back anyways so its win-win #automaticmasterrace

My understanding of this thread:

Use your penis as a chock for your rear wheels on a hill. If it's too flaccid to hold you in place, you need to practice more.

All of this talk of use brakes not gears to slow down a manual, dont use your hand brake when stationary etc makes me think that for a lot of people this may be the first manual car theyve driven. I suppose a manual car has become rare these days its all about auto these days, but you need to remember this car was built to replicate 80's and 90's models and ever farther back"gt2000" and should probably drive it the way those cars were driven. If you have an auto youre in another category of driver and this dosent apply, the auto does half the work for you anyway. Its a relatively low tech car and you will rarely get to drive anything similar, were lucky that way.

^i.e. No CD player. Disable the ABS. Airbags? Chuck those. Goddamnit! Are you using direct injection?! Get a carburetor on that thing ASAP!

Sweet gravy train riding baby Jesus, is that a turn key ignition? You get your lazy ass out of the car, jam that crank handle onto the crankshaft, and spin that mother til you hear a boom!

Uphill starts: parking brake vs riding clutch for a sec

Sorry dude but not 100% correct I learnt to drive in the UK 20 years ago and my instructor recommend the use of the HB until you are able to hill start without it.

Last I checked they are part of Europe and would never fail anybody for using HB. However if you rolled back too much they would fail you.

To be honest who cares, just have fun be save and enjoy it.

So what are y'all gonna do on the day you go to rip that pbrake on that super steep SanFran hill and the cable snaps?

*shit storm resume*

I have to confess, I taught myself to drive manual in this car. My first day out (the day after I drove it home from the dealership and stalled 6 times), I found some hill to practice. I had a douche nozzle threatening my exhaust pipes. I stalled once after a roll-back. On my second go, I used the pbrake because I think they were now playing "just the tip" with my exhaust.

I haven't used the pbrake to start on a hill since then. It's either a pre-rev with my heel so I have some energy in the system, or a heel-toe start if I have time to get it right. If the hill is shallow, it's just a quick move over to gas with a bit of clutch at the biting point to hold it.

Another confession: I was leaving a show. I was on an incline in the parking garage that was so steep I had to pull myself forward with the steering wheel in an attempt to see over the hood to check for cars. The garage was VERY busy with everyone leaving at the same time. I did the pre-rev thing, and then jumped on the gas. The tires chirped on that epoxy stuff they use to waterproof the garages. I bet everyone was thinking "man, that guy, I wish I could be his friend" No fawks given.

Don't use your pbrake as a crutch. Learn to use the 3 pedals at your feet the way they were meant to be used, and leave the pbrake for parking. btw, I'm 6'4" with size 13/14 feet. I don't want anybody complaining that they can't heel-toe in this car. It's definitely doable.

I sense sarcasm in your post...

But I would gladly buy a car that didn't have all that crap (although the crank handle start is a bit much). There is practically nothing like the sweet sound of side draft carbs on an inline 4 or 6 at WOT. If we didn't have smog check, I'd be looking into a pair of down draft Webers for the FRS. Oh, and don't forget to throw traction control out, too!

Yeah so would I, but this car isn't exactly high tech, the engine and internals are state of the art, but in the cabin you don't have a lot of tech compared to most other cars. I know people who have x5's and Porsches with all the latest gadgets and the more gadgets they have the more there is a chance for something to go wrong. Do you really need a massage while you're driving? There's no happy ending with that anyway.

Actually there is a whole tread about that here someplace. Apparently steam cleaning is the only solution.
