I've watched your videos. I hope you are over your depression about the downfalls on the car. I went from a tuned Saab 9-3 Aero with 320hp/405lbft, to this little dinky 200hp and I'll tell you what, I don't mind. My drives are typically all shorty-boppers around NYC and I don't care. The car still feels capable, compliant and fun. I know at any time I can swing the back end out if I want.
For instance, some **** in a BMW wouldn't let me over into the right lane so I could get onto a a bridge. From a dead stop I pulled my first 180 degree turn around and went the other way. I couldn't do that in my Saab. Do I miss the torque on the highway? Sure. But the FR-S is just so engaging. Drop it down a gear or two, listen to the revs, pass, then back into 6th. I think bolt-ons and tune will really help. I got my Perrin header back exhaust in my closet waiting for a warm weekend to install, an FA20 intake on its way and I'll be ordering an FA20 tune as well. It's tough, especially for me growing up with Saabs and having owned 3 of the highest performing editions (9-5 Aero, Viggen, 9-3 Aero) to "downgrading" to a 2.0L NA boxer. It's not the same and never will be and that's something I, personally, have to get over. |

Cool vid. I think there was so much interest in a how-to-drive-stick tutorial in the BRZ because so many Americans who normally wouldn't care much for sports cars are becoming converts with interest in the BRZ but don't know how to drive stick. And many first time drivers/kids who can't drive yet but can watch youtube vids gravitate towards the BRZ. This is what happens when an enthusiast's car captivates the mainstream in a country where the majority can only drive automatics.

Uploaded a new video of some second gear pulls in a tunnel with the SRT header-back. For those interested, the car was between 4k and 7k the whole time.

Want to add a tiiiny but important fact on "how to drive stick".
You mention that some people leave their car in 1st or reverse when parked. Which gear to put it in actually does matter! If you are on an uphill slope, putting it in 1st will prevent your call from rolling back (at the expense of tranny life) whereas as a downhill slope, putting it in reverse will do the opposite. Essentially, you want to be in the gear that is OPPOSITE to the direction of travel of the car. Driver exams done in stick shift tests here in Ontario, Canada will actually watch for the above. Failing to do so will result in immediate failure. There is a section of the test where they find an uphill or downhill section and ask you to parallel park to the curb. Not only do you have to turn the wheel to the direction of the curb, you have to put it in the right gear. |

I also noticed the "riding" the clutch in the video. I cannot see your heel though but I tend to stay away from resting the foot on the clutch pedal. It is something I have always been taught and told you can wear the clutch faster doing this. I know everyone drives differently, just wondering if you are leaving weight on the pedal while driving. Been driving Stick about as long as you too lol awesome video though. My best advice is just get out there and drive. It was how I learned in my Integra. My other car was broken so I needed to drive the Integra to work. Needless to say after only 2 stalls I was driving!

At the op: I still do not quite get how you down shift and rev match. I typically just downshift, give gas, and ease of the clutch as smooth as I can. Yea, it might wear down the clutch a little, but for me, it's easier to do this. Now, when I'm trying to pass someone and I down shift, well, that's a different story

Here's a thumbs-up and thanks to Subaruwrxfan for all the great videos on youtube and the posts here. While I was shopping for a BRZ over the past 6 weeks, I never had a chance to actually sit in one on a dealer lot here in NC...very hard to find them in stock. I test drove an FR-S twice. Subaruwrxfan's videos, particularly the long video overview of his new car gave me a chance to check it out virtually.
I like it so much, I bought a WR Blue Limited myself! ![]() Keep up the good work with the videos! |
