I was all ready to get the Scion and pay the Scion "one price" until I took a look at the BRZ Limited and discovered that the Subaru dealers in my region were dealin'. I ended up with the BRZ Limited for only a little bit more than the Scion -- no brainer. And yes, the leather/alacantra seats, the HIDs and the keyless ignition are all very nice. Not crazy about the nav/radio, but I guess it's better than nothing.

HIDs, LED daytime runners, Nav Screen (even though it's not that good), black gauge cluster, front bumper, silver trim instead of fake carbon fiber, and brand image. The HIDs, the front bumper and brand image were my main decision points.
I got a premium BRZ for invoice price (about the same price as an FR-S), so it was an obvious choice for me. |

Didn't care about brand.
Scion headlights looked cheap (how much would some black paint really cost them?). HID headlights. LED eyelids/running lights (when driving with only these on the car gets 10x the attention, if you're into that sorta thing. Apparently I am.). WRB. Alcantara seats. Wife wanted heated seats (they were great in my old WRX, but the ones in the BRZ suck). Front bumper in person compared to the FR-S (in pictures I preferred the FR-S, but in person it was surprisingly the other way around... liked the spoiler in person too after hating it in pictures). Fender vent design. Suspension. Coming from a WRX it felt familiar and is still easy to send into oversteer at will while very stable the rest of the time. Actually I came to this conclusion after I bought the BRZ, but it stopped me from swapping the suspension for some FR-S parts like I had originally planned to do. Prefer the gauges and silver trim. The cost wasn't much more.

I agree about those things -- VERY different in person compared to how it's perceived from pictures.

New bit of info of why I chose the BRZ: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36110
Also, I was fortunate enough to test drive both, just like the thread above. FR-S is softer so I guess you can chuck around easier, but on a back country drive; I would like a more balance, poised vehicle. BRZ gives me that.

I wouldn't so much say Subaru for the mature crowd, but the opposite. That Scion goes for the "immature" crowd. Also I wouldn't look forward to getting my car serviced at some huge dealership. Toyota, cough cough.

At first I wanted an FR-S because I am a sucker for the Hot Lava color, but after test driving them back to back it was the BRZ that came out on top. On paper they may not appear to be that different, but do a side by side comparison of the actual cars and then tell me that the BRZ is not worth the extra money. There are a lot of little details on the interior that are different between the cars. If anyone has owned a German car, I think you will know what I am talking about. Not saying the BRZ is up to the same quality interior as say an Audi, but about the same if not almost better than the VW GLI that I traded for the BRZ. It serves the purpose that I wanted. DD with refined interior and all the bells and whistles. Now if I was buying for the track, then I would say the FR-S makes more sense. I like that we have the option.

Scion's target demographic is kids. Subaru's target market is college educated snow-belt residents. And lesbians. (jk jk
)Subaru races. Scion kinda does, but not really. But really, they are both excellent cars. Don't let anyone tell you that you bought the wrong car if it makes you happy. |

Toyota dropped the ball in my eyes. They figured the American buyer would not know what an AE86 was or the significance of it. Then when I heard "Scion ...", my choice was made for me. The BRZs twin IS the Toyota GT 86. I refuse to acknowledge the existence of a third model from two car companies. So with all this in mind..... I bought the only one of the two offered in the USA.

I haven't bought my BRZ yet, but I'm working on it. I drove them both, and the BRZ did feel somewhat... nicer. The interior was better, as I hated the Carbon Fiber in the FRZ (Though I rather have the white gauges) and the console/head unit was crap. In the BRZ, at least it tries to be modern (Still probably going to swap that out).
Heated seats were okay, nice to have on really cold days, I suppose. The other is rareity. I don't want what everyone else has, and in 5 years, everyone will be in FR-S's. |

BRZ OVER THE FR-S
1)SMART KEY/PUSH BUTTON START
2)HEATED SEATS 3)LEATHER/ALCANTARA SEATS 4)HID'S 5)LED DRL'S 6)SUBARU (JUST CAN'T EMBRACE THE SCION MONIKER) I DO LIKE THE FR-S NOSE A LITTLE BETTER BUT THE AVAILABLE FEATURES ON THE BRZ LIMITED LISTED ABOVE MORE THAN SURPASS THE NOSE PREFERENCE! NOTE--IF TOYOTA WOULD HAVE MADE THIS A CELICA OR COROLLA GT-S IN AMERICA I WOULD HAVE BIT, PRIMARILY BECAUSE IM SURE ALL THE EXTRA'S LISTED ABOVE WOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE ON A TOYOTA VERSION AS IT IS IN JAPAN AND EUROPE ON THE GT86. LOVE MY CHOICE, LOVE MY BRZ!! |
