Put in a Neptune blue Premium MT at a dealer last week, they told me it will be around June next year, not sure how realistic is it lol. They still putting it in as a 22 though which is strange.

Really?! I knew Halo (white) is very popular but didn't think Pavement (grey) was very popular. It's a gorgeous color once you see a real one. White is gorgeous as well but in some angles, it looks flat. Pavement compliments the car's curves better.

My dealership has had only silvers and pavements so far, and each was pre-sold. It seems like red and Trueno are the two least popular, at least from my small sample size of a group

And to think that my magnetite grey metallic was a "rarer" color. lol I always thought white, WRB, Neptune are the popular choices.

It could very well be skewed by the shortage, so people are just ordering what they can... In other news, I heard from my dealer I am 6th in line, but two ahead of me are AT premiums, so I'm pretty much 4th. Might be longer than I think I can mentally withstand lol

With so limited supply, I would imagine the cars that are actually landing in dealerships are built to order meaning that is what people are ordering. Still kind of surprised to see that silver and grey are popular choices.

Unlike BRZs none of the 86s are built to "order". They are all simple allotment cars and the dealer gets what they send. If you get lucky and the dealer receives or trades for what you want that is just good fortune. It is pretty much a lottery at this point.

Is there any particular reason why Toyota operates like that, or is there no (known) method to the madness? lol

It has never been confirmed by anybody that can prove it but the standing theory is that since Toyota actually buys the cars from Subaru they just don't have a way or desire to do special orders.
You can factory order any other Toyota model you want just not the 86.

Very interesting. I'd use the thank button but I can't find it, so, thanks!

I don't want this to just sound like dealership-bashing, but I have a feeling that a lot of them these days are just throwing out random info and whatever happens, happens.

A friend of mine used to work at a Toyota dealership in southern Ontario, and lately there they are saying that the Corollacross is a 1 year waitlist. I find it hard to believe that an utterly mass-produced vanilla CUV has the same wait time as a low-production sportscar like the 86.

Another person I know ordered a Tundra hybrid last year (whenever they opened up the orders for that truck, can't remember exactly...) and only this spring got a notification that it was delayed and they couldn't give a precise date. So he opted for the non-hybrid and a few weeks later they confirmed that he'd get it June 16th. Monday of this week the dealer calls to say the delivery has been pushed out by Toyota to the first week of August.

So, what can you do?

In Canada they use an allocation system for all vehicles. Every "factory order" is actually a "sold order request"; a request to be allocated that particular package with the customers information attached

Factory plans a build list

Sends build list to national

National decides a sold order request fill rate % based on dealer sales plans and # of outstanding orders nationally

That % of unit are used to fill sold order requests (what most people are told are "factory orders")

Remaining units are given to zone

Zone allocates remaining scheduled builds as stock

Dealers get an ETA based on planned build date

Vehicle goes into production and ETA is adjusted

Vehicle is built, ETA adjusts,

Vehicle ships, ETA adjusts, etc

We used to tell people its a "factory order" as its so much simpler. But now with the current shortages we explain what is actually happening. Toyota builds what they can, and then matches them as best they can. No guarantee they build your request
