I found an answer at Tirerack:

For the next inspections it will be necessary to temporarily install the wheel by snugging down the lug nuts or bolts in order to verify disc brake caliper clearance. You should have at least 3-4mm of clearance between your wheels and the brakes on the vehicle.

The wheels were to comply with SCCA C Street rules, so the tires are wide for the wheels. After a full season of autocrossing and 1 track day, there is no sign of rubbing on the sidewall and the strut.

Titan 7 5S 17x9 offset +37. Loads of clearance for calipers. A little tight with front spring perch but still clears. Wheels are 16.8 lbs. Tires are 245/40 17. Great looking affordable forged wheels. Light and strong.

do you have more pictures of the oem spring clearance? this was the setup i've been looking at, but it looked really close to the spring perch...

Fast Wheels FC04 in 17x8.0 +40 clear. Nice, cheap and light (17lbs) flow formed wheel. I little stretched with the stock 215/45/17 Primacy.

Here are a few pictures of the clearance with and without tires. Could not really measure, but you can see that there is decent clearance for this setup. I am on Eibach prokit springs, so lowered 1 inch, and have factory alignment settings. I plan to get a little more negative camber all around for autocross, but not sure how much the clearance will allow. I would bet I can still get 1.5-2 degrees. I weighed the OE wheel/tire, and the new set up for comparison, and they were almost identical (about 45 pounds total). So, I widened the wheel/tire setup significantly without adding any weight. So far very pleased with the performance and appearance.

Having gone through a similar problem myself, I recommend just going straight to coilovers if you can. You'll most likely get coilovers evantually anyways, so might as well save money on avoiding all the extra trial-and-error-and-alignment iterations. I'm really happy that my friend gave me that advice before I invested money into any suspension upgrades and just went straight to coilovers.

If you do want the extra steps, you might consider camber plates instead of bolts — this will give you more adjustability, more stability, and less worrying about a camber bolt going loose on a pothole or a curb at the track and the perch cutting your tire. If you do go with camber bolts, use the bottom bolts not top to get a couple of extra mm of clearance.

Thank you. Coilovers would have given more clearance and adjustability, and I may still go that direction in the future. I will have to get a more aggressive alignment and see what it feels like. Camber plates sound like a good idea too, and I will look into that.
