Oh nice! I know the speed academy guys in Canada did a K24 swap to their s14, its all over youtube if you need ideas' this engine is VERY potent. even in stock form..

Yes I did watch the speed academy series when it came out and I was also considering using the BMW trans like they did, although after watching them drive it I was kind of turned off from the idea so will probably use an S2k trans now.

The K24 engines make decent power stock but not all of them, you want to avoid the i-VTEC versions. People do build some incredibly powerful NA K24 engines too but its going to cost big $$$.

Anyway mine will be turbocharged at low boost in the first stage and then later down the track I will build the motor to take more boost and hopefully make some decent power.

What I am struggling with now is the location of the steering rack, I have not purchased a rack yet but I do have a electric motor that pumps the fluid out of an Opel/Holden Astra.

At the moment the steering rack needs to sit about where the front of the crank pulley is and I still need to add a small pulley to the front of the crank for the dry sump.

I have two ideas at the moment to solve this but am open to suggestions from you guys.

My first idea was to use those rack offset spacers that drifters use to step the rack forward but still keep the tie rods where they need to be, this will gain me about 25mm.

The other idea is to move the front wheels forward i.e. extend the wheelbase. This will obviously move the tie rod connection point on the knuckles forward buying me some more space for the steering rack. I am not sure if I am overlooking any downsides to extending the wheelbase though? Normally that would be rather extreme modification but since I am already re-designing the whole front suspension its actually very easy for me to do. Also I have noted in a video on youtube that the Subaru GT300 BRZ extended their wheelbase by 35mm for the 2017 season.

Is it possible to use a steering knuckle from a different McPherson strut vehicle? One where the tie rod pickup is in the rear of the knuckle.
Or, swap the knuckles between left/right so the tie rod pickup is in the rear.

Or leave all that alone and lower the steering rack below the crank pulley? (I'm assuming this isn't possible though for ground clearance reasons?)

Not sure if you have doors or not picked out but, if it is allowed their are some Seibon Carbon fiber doors for sale in the classifieds of the forum. They are a steal at the price he is selling them for, even if you add shipping. The lighter you can make it the better, Toyota's own "TRD Griffon Concept" proved that.

Have you considered just keeping the electric PS, the rack should be smaller. Certainly drive units are available on the market. I've also seen controllers for OEM units, some even have adjustable force.

I am in the final stages of a double wishbone conversion using mazda rx8 knuckles, besides that I want the motor as low as possible so there will not be any space for a steering rack under the motor.

I have to make composite panels for the majority of this car and they will all need to be one off parts unique to this project. Don't worry, it will be light!

I bought this car as a shell without a steering rack so its not an option unless I go find a used one out of a brz/86 and I'm not sure how well the factory electric rack will like my 295 width tyres either.

I wouldn’t worry about 295s. I know of at least 3 teams running 315s up front with factory steering.

Its just come back to me now, the fundamental reason I cannot use the BRZ rack is that its rear steer and I need front steer i.e. the steering would turn the opposite direction to your input.

I could potentially use an electric rack from a front steer car though.

MIght I suggest looking at the the saturn ION, they had electric racks and might be front steer. the old go to was the MR2 sw20 racks but they got some gd expensive..
