Right, it works just like your usual alternator (but probably a little more efficient), but can provide a small amount of regen braking and boost to the tune of 20hp, when asked to. Would need an AC motor controller, probably some hall effect sensors, and a higher voltage battery to supply some real juice rather than the wimpy 12.6V from the usual battery.

I think the setup is, when you're cruising along it is just like your usual alternator (except sapping a little less power), then when you lift your foot off it is as if your engine got bigger and has more engine braking except it's feeding power to the battery, and then when you step hard on the gas the car feeds power to the motor to give you a boost. Basically you get a lot more low end torque for the price of some extra electronics and a second battery. Actually, you could significantly downsize the first battery and just have it trickle charged by the bigger battery when the car is sitting in the driveway, or just replace it with some ultracapacitors with just enough power to start the motor on 12V in an emergency, so this potentially can be done for a few hundred bucks and adds maybe 20 pounds if you skimp a little on the high voltage battery.

You have enough room in the Spyder?

Start here, worry about mmc rods later.

LOL. Spyder doesn't need low end torque though, stomping on the gas in 1st gear can significantly load up the clutch springs and gives a horrible jolt. Although it would if I put in a 1NZ tuned for max power.

That channel under the car has just some coolant lines and wiring running through. I could put some UMHWPE plate over it and then stick batteries there for some ultra low ballast. I could put a computer fan with filter there for cooling too.

This is pretty interesting, I might buy a shitty alternator just to take it apart and mess around with it sometime. It's a little hard to tell what the claw poles and rotor windings actually do based on a picture, would be much easier to just look at the real thing. In fact, motor controllers are dirt cheap as well so this is actually a feasible project. I might need some gargantuan relays though. I have a bag of like 30 small ones sitting around, 15 * 4? amps = 60A, not great I suppose.

Shit, I know people that pay a lot more for pictures of their car, and they don't even get rolling shots! I'd say it's well worth it. Now you just need to try and get Violation #86!
