I hope that stuff on top is supposed to be there and isn't simply an indicator of the age.

I had my first slab of fake chicken. It was okay. The breading is what gives it the chicken flavor. Otherwise it is basically just mush. I've been working to ween myself off meat. Not easy.

But....but....what about all those poor plants? They don't stand a chance just rooted to the ground and all. At least with meat there is an opportunity for escape....well once in a blue moon.

I'm afraid that chicken patty looks just awful.

I've had the Impossible burger and I have to admit its pretty good. I'd eat it again. If you look at the nutritional content and such you might as well be eating beef though. It's still loaded with saturated fat and sodium, and the calories aren't that different.

If it takes off in a big way, it still isn't going to replace non-ground beef products like steak, at least not yet. That probably means it would drive steak prices up (steak prices are dependent on the sale of ground beef to keep the price down) and ground beef prices would fall, or it would get exported.

I think the market for premium meat will open up in a big way. Especially if it becomes cheaper to produce plant-based meat at the low end. A lot of eateries that have to compete, like McDonald's and Wendy's, will probably still keep their premium beef options, but eventually have to ditch real beef or even chicken for their value options.

I don't care about the nutrition since I keep in shape. I'm also not bothered by the treatment of animals. It is more about the environmental issues. Granted, our farming practices aren't ideal either, but it seems to be the lesser evil of the two. Also, if a side effect is less factory farming animals, I guess that is good from an ethics point of view.

You're right about exporting meat. Just like coal, just because we adopt new types of resources doesn't mean the demand necessarily changes. That is unless other countries aggressively adopt policies that discourage consumption of those resources.

I see Tyson just invested in a company working on plant-based shrimp.

Should be an interesting future.
