Is Toyota gonna end up out pricing this car from its competitors? Or will it be more reasonable?

Hey i can't disagree with that and that's why I like it.

And the interior is pretty sweet, but that kind of stuff never makes it to production.

The pics were posted on CL 2 years ago. Some report said it was LFA hybrid. I think it's the production version of LF-LC. It means they have developed the car since 2010, or maybe longer.

But sports cars are back in the Japanese giant's product plan, led by the Lexus LFA and the new Scion FR-S, which is just about to hit showroom floors. And now it appears the green lamp is finally about to be lit on a long-awaited Supra successor.

Several years ago, Toyota's U.S.-based product planners pitched a new hybrid sports car with looks, power, and environmental credentials. Unveiled at the 2007 Detroit auto show as the FT-HS, the concept reportedly pointed the way toward a reinterpretation of the Supra.

The financial crisis of 2008 prevented the FT-HS from becoming anything more than an attractive concept. But the spirit of that coupe survived and is reportedly being channeled into the design of the on-again, off-again, on-again Supra project. The edges and sharp angles you see in the attached illustration at top are how one artist interprets the direction Toyota is believed to be heading with its new sports car.

The car's final body is expected to be dropped onto the chassis of the GRMN MRS prototype, which has already undergone testing at Fuji Speedway. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Meister of Nurburgring, and was named after Nurburgring expert Hiromu Naruse, Toyota's late godfather of sports car development.

Unlike the rear-drive FT-HS, the new sports coupe (it's unlikely to be called Supra) would employ an all-wheel-drive system and generate upwards of 400 horsepower. The car is rumored to feature a mid-engine-mounted, 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid setup mated to a CVT lifted from the new Lexus RX, but tuned for higher performance. The engine would drive the rear wheels, while in-wheel electric motors would power the fronts. GRMN's expertise would be utilized to help develop the car.

The million-dollar question is when we'll see it in production. It's no secret that company CEO Akio Toyoda -- weekend racer, sports car addict, and the driving force behind bringing the extravagantly priced LFA to market -- is enthusiastic about a Supra successor. Toyota bosses haven't officially approved the project, but if Toyoda has his way and the economy shows continued signs of recovery, the new coupe could be on showroom floors by late 2015 for less than $60,000.
I predict a slow news day.

I think it probably varies based on where you're from. In Europe, "hybrid" has the "waste of money" stigma attached, because more lax emissions lets them put all these fuel sipping weak diesels on the market. In America, "hybrid" = Prius = ugly, self-righteous tree hugger car. I bet in Japan though, people have less of an objection to it.

I think what they need to do is to start quietly slipping hybrid drives into cars as the fuel economy regulations tighten up, and rather than brag that it's green because it's hybrid, just brag about the great city fuel economy test results and massive low end torque Then no one will complain until they notice this little thing attached to the motor with some really really fat wires coming out of it. Then after they tear it out in anger and find that it weighs barely anything but was contributing a lot to the low end torque (and making the electrical systems run for more than 20 minutes), they'll stop complaining again.

But seriously, they will start using integrated belt driven starter-alternators soon, and as those units get more powerful they can quietly slip in significant amounts of regeneration/electrical assist without telling anyone about it, to not upset the people whose manhood relies on the excessive consumption of brake pads and fuel, which is unfortunately a big enough portion of the market that they should be making an effort to appeal to them.

Are you following Toyota's LeMans attempt this year? Sounds like they designed that car with you in mind.

With me in mind? You're too kind
If you ask me, hybrids should've started in racing, and then trickled down. On a street car, you brake a lot when you're rolling around in the city, and that happens when you're traveling along at very low speeds, and not going very far. On the highway, if you aren't one of those shitty drivers that panics the moment there's a slight downhill grade and slams on the brakes, you basically don't touch the brakes either.

In a race though? Decelerating from high speed several times a minute means basically all your fuel energy is ending up in the brakes/tires.

I'm guessing this didn't happen because no one had really done much work on applying power electronics and energy storage to cars so the upfront cost wasn't worth it.
