I watched five autocross videos today, seeing how it looked and whether I wanted to try it.

I don't think I can. Even finish.

In all 5 I had not one single clue how he knew which cones he was going to next and on what side.

I would seriously, take at least one wrong turn.

Humiliating

IDK how you are still doing it while having a spouse, and I think a kid also?

Presume the pay is really good. :p

I already identified the issue, you haven't been out on the course once yet. Everyone has to start somewhere, even the veterans who have been doing it for decades were newbies once. My first time out, I was slow as snails, and I got lost on the course many times.

My advice is, go out to the very next autocross nearest you and sign up as a novice. I bet my next paycheck that someone will walk up to your window and say "Hello! I am a novice instructor for today. Would you like me to sit in your passenger seat and give you tips if needed?"

I felt embarrassed when it was my first time out and I got lost but everyone there is to cheer each other on (even though we are competing against one another). Trust me on this, just get a helmet, check that your car is in working order, see if you can meet up with a seasoned friend to make things less nerve wracking, and go out and have fun! If you think its not for you, then thats ok! You at least tried it.

There's an upcoming event that will feature a class dedicated to FRS and BRZs, let me know if you are interested and I'll point you in the right direction.

I've always thought that too, but there's usually people/cones pointing you in the right direction.
You can usually walk the course before the runs start as well.

Looks like you already found the thread. Locust is a cool dude, very helpful to newbies, and will answer any question you have.

That event was my first auto-x event ever, and I didn't like nor hate it. But it was the bug that bit me, and I never looked back. Because of the lessons I've learned since with regards to driving, its worth every penny I have spent so far.

Plus, I made so many new friends in less than 1 year of doing this!

Yep, wife and kid.
Pay and benefits are pretty good.

The days I work kind of suck but the 3-4 days off is nice.

Also, growing up is weird, but I suppose my job doesn't help.

I recall 2 years ago before I took the job, I was seeing friends every weekend, and then usually a couple nights through the week too. Now, everyone is constantly doing shit, and it's nearly impossible to work anything out. Guess it doesn't help that a couple of them have kids now, though. Ah well, the few and far between visits are great anyways

I wish you could know that you're in the good old days, before you've actually left them.
