I have a theory that brussel sprouts and asparagus are actually just very slow aliens that invaded earth and we have been eating them ever since. Neither one appears to be terrestrial in origin.

Since they both are grown extensively in California, I would tend to agree -

They do kind of look like the pods from aliens or halo...

Love asparagus. I used to have an asparagus bed, but it died out in the drought. That and the chickens. It was great. Every spring I had lots. Stuff comes up so fast in the spring. I would just sit in the backyard and snap them off and eat them.

So, you killed the asparagus crown(s) by first watching it die of thirst, while snapping the spears above the ground (as opposed to cutting them off below the ground) and then you probably didn't let it go to fern, thus starving the crown.-

Hard telling what happened to your chickens -

I had an asparagus cutter.

I let them fern out around July every year. The last year I cut it down too early probably, and I was way over my water rations. Also developed a grub problem. I was bummed. I had about $300 invested in the bed.

Chickens are fine and living the high life on 4 acres in Morgan Hill. Found them a great home.
