During the weekend as me and my wife were getting ready she told me to put something on. I sneakily put on sword art online, I had walked away for a couple minutes and when I entered the room she was there sitting on the bed staring at the tv. So far we've seen 10 episodes so far usually one or two once she gets home from work.

Well that's what a lot of people think when the see the popular anime. Most of the time they only see one type of anime, usually it's a kids anime show. Like Naruto and One Piece ( and yes they are kid shows in Japan so don't get your panties in a bunch and yes those shows suck a bag of disks too) but they miss out on the other stuff anime has. But.... Just like there are different genres like there are Hollywood movies, anime has the same. It all depends who you ask. If you ask a young girl what kind of movies they like you'll get a bunch of chick flicks. If you ask some old dude you get a bunch of deep thinking dramas. If you ask some male teen young adult you'll get a bunch of action movies. So there you go. Also Sword Art Online sucks a bag of disks. It's a total ripoff from two shows .hack/sign and Tower of Duragua. Also they have the same people that did the soundtrack from .hack/sign. Incase you missed it I'm not a huge fan of anime kid shows. I perfer the mind fuck/holy shit wtf type of shows. I showed a co worker of mine Monster. He was lost in it for two weeks. Always keep asking what was going to happen next or telling how fucked up the last episode was.

To be fair the first 2 eps of SOA where great. Artwork and soundtrack are top notch. My beef is when the writer and marking company claimed it as an original show. The under 20' somethings think so. The older generation agrees with me.
If they would have sold it as a reboot or their version of .hack/Tower of Duragua I would totally be cool with it. But no.

Oddly Sailor Moon was the show that cemented me as an anime fan. Didn't expect something that cute looking having such a dark plot. Before that it was Robotec got my attention. Oddly at the same time Voltron was on but it wasn't on par with how fucked up Robotec was. No one really died on Vorton at lest from what I remember, but with Robotec, (spoiler alert!) I was shocked when Skull Leader dude (I forget his name) was killed.
On the same thing I'm not much of a fan of DBZ. My first intro to DBZ was the movies. When saw the series I was highly disappointed after they defeated Vaggeta then lost interest and crawed to finish the Friza arch. Then it became repetitive, rinse and repeat.

You could say that about video games too. Anime has a lot of different genres and niches. Far too many for an outsider to summarize them all with quaint phrases.
I finally finished Musaigen no Phantom World. It was fun until the last couple episodes. Then it cheesed the ending. I don't like how they tied everything up in the end. Watched Haibane Renmei. Started watching Boku no Hero Academia. What else... |

Here's an interesting tidbit. I watched Saturday morning cartoons and 4Kids was sprinkled in there. When I was young of course I had no clue had how terrible 4Kids actually was, but my god are they horrible. I first found One Piece through that. The first time I actually watched it, unedited I was kind of shocked. I thought it was a kids show, so I guess 4Kids did well. When I saw the characters actually beating the living hell out of each other, covered in blood and cussing it was quite interesting.
