This is from SCCA Solo rules regarding modifications. First excerpt is that "except for modifications authorized below, Stock Category cars must be run as specified by the factory with only standard equipment as defined by these Rules."

The second excerpt is that "if a modification is not specifically authorized in this or previous sections of these Rules, it is not allowed."

Together, this means that since there is no specific mention of underbody panels being an allowable modification, it is not allowable.

And looking through the ST rules, I saw no reference to ub panels, so they are probably illegal there as well unless they are considered part of a body kit.

Here is a link to the AZSolo mod guide. http://www.azsolo.com/classes/car_cl...sheet_2009.pdf It is a little out of date, specifically front sway bars are now ok in stock class.

Here is also from the 2012 SCCA Rule book:

"13.2
A. Accessories, gauges, indicators, lights and other appearance, comfort
and convenience modifications which have no effect on performance
and/or handling and do not materially reduce the weight of
the car are permitted." (bolded for accent)

It could be argued that these are appearance modifications, because they do not have any proven performance effect and they don't add any weight.

In reality, you can either ask, or just run the covers and if someone lodges a protest, deal with it then.

Rulebook says to send a letter asking for clarification if you have a question.

I agree. But before I run a regional event or a national event, and if I thought I might do well, I would check first because, at big events, people do protest. Local events, nobody will care enough to protest.

The SCCA rules seem odd at times. For example, if I want to stay stock, I cannot debadge my car, but I can install dual adjustable shocks with remote reservoirs. Go figure.

Since the underbody panels appeal to me, I asked for clarification from rule gurus on panels on the local solo forum.

I think its also ridiculous that if you have a fancy aftermarket oil cap (the grimmspeed one for instance), your car is classed the same as if you put fully adjustable coil overs on (ST*)

Let us know what the rule guru's say, i'm kind of curious. My car is going to be an STX build anyway (I'd get waxed in STR), but I'm curious if these panels would even matter, since we know there's no noticeable difference at autoX speeds.

Thanks for asking on the AZSolo forums. I wonder if the clarification that they are OEM parts that are not fitted for the US market but the mounting points are already on the cars for, would help get a more favorable response.

Of course, I bet that in an auto-x situation, they would probably hinder performance due to the extra weight more than they would help due to aerodynamics. Still, that probably won't stop a determined protest since it would be difficult to prove.

So, I found the question int he AZsolo forum. Phrased that way, of course the answer will be No.

"Are OEM underbody panels from another market (ie JDM) legal in stock class (or ST)?"

Asking "are underbody panels legal in stock" sounds like you're asking if these are legal:

Well I removed my muffler last night. Doesn't sound bad at all. I would definitely like to get some pipes made to fill in the ports where the stock muffler tips were.

Also took a pic while under the car. There's really not much going on. I like the simplicity of it -

I posted the rephrased question to see if it would elicit a different answer. I suspect the answer will be only if the entire car is changed to a JDM OEM trim.

Do not drive very long without a turn-down pipe on that exhaust flange... it can get hot enough to melt the rear end, though I don't know what else it would take, or how long and hard you have to drive for that to happen. Just a helpful tip.

Just drove Pacific coast highway from LA to monterey it was amazing I highly recommend it to anyone going to California it is a long stretch mostly cliffs and insane banked turns and a good speed limit of 55 most turns can't be taken much over 35 I'll post videos when I get a chance!

After I drove to work this morning I decided to see how hot the plastic was, and it was warm to the touch. I have some sheets of aluminum, I might just make a heat shield around that part of the bumper if heat becomes a real issue.
