I don't NEED a new car, but I'd like one. I'd like a DGM Limited automatic. I'm not inclined to buy a Premium, and even less inclined to buy an FR-S. I want certain features in my next car. If I have to wait, or buy elsewehere to get what I want for a price I'm willing to pay, I'll do so.

I'm wondering how many lightly used '13 BRZs & FR-Ss we'll see on the market in Summer 2013. Young kids who couldn't make the bill; people who jumped on the hype, but ended up not liking the car; or the "DAYUM they've got a 2014 STI/Toyota FT86 out!" people.

Sorry if I've strayed too far off topic.
I really don't think you'll see too many used ones for sale. If this car is as fun to drive as everybody says it is, nobody is gonna wanna get rid of them. The limited supply means resale value will be really good for this car, so if you wanna wait till next year, just buy a new one. I don't think you'll be getting any deals on a used one anytime soon, especially if you want an automatic, they'll be even rarer.

even though car prices depreciate the most within the first 3 years of ownership, i think that you'll find used 1 year old BRZs still selling at pretty close to msrp due to the lack of availability, assuming this whole subaru allocation thing is true.

See, I'm in a rut, cuz my car is aging and I need to get rid of it as soon as possible before it's worth nothing lol. But I'd like to avoid the markups as well. Damn--dilemmas, yo!

I've found that used cars, especially now, 1 or 2 years out, are about the same price as a new car.

Some people are underwater on the loan and add the fact that some those people probably hoon'd the hell out of the car and unfortunately you aren't getting that much of a deal.

If I was going to wait, it would be 4+ years and I can't wait that long.

I need a NEW/USED car right about now, and would like to get one before the end of the year, so we'll see.

Good points for sure! If I decide to wait, I could be inclined to buy a '14 or shop another brand at that point. I guess I was just trying to say I'm not gonna get hyped into over-spending on one.

We've had an automatic '87 CRX, and '00 Miata in the family. Both bought used, but nearly new. You DO have to keep your eyes open, but "slushbox" sporty cars don't tend to sell well. Both were had for very good deals from the original-selling dealers, LOL.

So, since this is my first new car purchase, I should be shooting for AT MSRP price, right? (If not at invoice + $xxx), right?

Shoot for invoice. They offer $XXX over invoice or $XXX below MSRP or flat MSRP, try to haggle and take it. I would pass on anything over MSRP, but also realize that getting it below MSRP is improbable. Not impossible, improbable.

Can you shoot me some clever verbatim phrases I should use in my call to see if they'll give us @invoice+$xxx, or below MSRP? Or is saying that enough? I don't have the gift of gab, nor a talent for negotiating lolz..

Well. First you have to wait for the car to come out (in any case, it doesn't seem like you're pre-ordering). Then you go to Edmunds.com and get the TMV for your car in YOUR area. You use that as a negotiation tool.

For example here's a hypothetical situation: a year from now the BRZ is selling for, on average, $24840 at your zip code (this is your TMV). The MSRP is $25840 and Invoice is $24495. Realistically, you shouldn't pay for more than the TMV; you come into the negotiation armed with the price are paying. The dealer knows he's gonna have a hard time selling it to you for more than that and thus you are better able to get a price that meets your requirements. The problem here is that the those prices haven't been announced yet AND demand is high. No dealer has incentive to sell for less when the car is LIMITED and DEMAND is high. Quantity supply curve shifts left and quantity demand curve shifts right, equilibrium price goes up (if I'm getting my basic econ right, it's been a while).

Basically, don't expect a good price as you don't really have any power in this negotiation beyond refusing a price you don't want to pay. I'd love to give you pointers, but this is my first new car. Depending on who I was talking to, I asked either leading questions that would get me the answer I wanted (e.g. "That's including freight, right?" "That's fully refundable, right?") or an open ended question (e.g. "So how much is that deposit?") to see what the salesman was thinking/trying to pull. Essentially, I was told not to tip my hand initially.

Meh, guess Im not gonna call then, since we don't really know either way with either dealership lolz. Guess I'll just wait on what Rich says in a few days.

I think you guys in SoCal are screwed really, unless there's so many initially available that there aren't buyers for them. The group buy kind of assures they have buyers, if most are serious. From the rumors we're hearing here, it sounds like that area's getting a lot of vehicles. It depends on how many of them are pre-sold and how many get shipped at once, but I could see it swinging either way.

I'm with you. I'm very interested but I am going to wait 6 months to a year until dealers have stopped treating them like a specialty item so I can negotiate or I'll just buy slightly used.
