It becomes very noticeable when you get up around 4,000 rpm's.

Thanks to those who found the different plugs and the spot in the cabin. I just picked up a set of the Hillman plugs at Lowes for a whopping $1.47 and took the car for a spin after popping in it--the difference is noticeable and much appreciated

I notice my car at about 80ish mph has a new sound that comes into play. A whistle like sound. Is this sound tube allowing this or making this noise?

How funny. I used the same plug from Lowe's to do a rear wiper delete on my r32 a while back. lol. Awesome to see another use for it.

Hi Guys. As the OP of this simple DIY, I thought I would return to give you some further observations on this DIY tip.

The plug I originally used which has been subsequently dubbed the "Lowes" plugs are very cheap and effective. I later updated the post when someone discovered that the plug in the glove box 12V socket also fits the sound tube as well. I tried this mod and found it to be effective also, but still not quite as good as the original plug I used. I can only summised that it doesn't seal 'quite' as well, but still good.

Some months ago, I fitted a Perrin intake tube which deletes the sound generator and tubing completely. I did this for other reasons and not for the sound thing, so I removed all the tubing except the small peice that is left going through the firewall, which now does nothing. This made the engine bay a lot less cluttered and I guess you can say there is also a VERY small weight reduction since it doesn't really weigh that much to start with. Anyway, with the sound components completely gone, there is NO less noise in the cabin than when it is just simply plugged. Therefore, if anybody is planing to remove the tube to get better gains, then you are wasting your time.

THAT IS HOW EFFECTIVE THE "LOWES" PLUG IS!

Glad you are all getting great results with this simple DIY.

Cheers.

Just wanted to thank @Tech and @enouf for this thread. The fix works pretty well even in the lower RPM range (which is where I will be for the next few hundred miles). I used the 12V adapter cover from the glove box because I have my dash cam plugged in there anyway.

There's a 12v plug in the glove box??? Sweet! I learned 2 things on this thread alone!

A big thanks to the OP for the glove box 12V adaptor cover tip!

I reckon that my cabin noise has gone down by 30-40%. It's significantly quieter now with none of that fake intake growl (I had the Red TRD Soundchanger Tube installed which was good fun until the header came in). Of course, it's much less aggressive on the inside but no less outside, which is a good thing. For once the cabin feels rather peaceful and I'm really enjoying the higher refinement levels. I have had the Borla UEL header, Perrin OP/FP, TRD drop-in filter and TRD Quadtip catback installed (plus a Ecutek tune), so yes it's rather loud.

The great thing is how easily it can be reversed - just take it off and go for a fun-filled joyride! Plug it in if you want some nice and easy cruising. I'll be sourcing for a generic 12v adaptor cover soon enough so the one in the glove box doesn't collect dust.

Can't stress how happy I am in discovering this thread. Kudos to the forum and its community!

I did the sound tube block off in wife's new 2014 FRS. In addition I also covered with scrap carpet sample...can't see it at all. Noticeably quieter at all speeds... distant engine roar is now upfront vice in passenger seat. No more blue tooth background noise interference. Thanks!
