The black/silver 86 piston looks a lot better than the red/silver on a color like whiteout.

I chose black/silver all the way round on my whiteout.

Hmmm, I'd agree with that to a certain extent, in that there's a lot of westernisms coming through but it all goes through a filter... and Japanese traditions and cultural habits are *very* strong still. I had students who would learn swearing from american rap, but then you would see them dressed in yukatas and kimonos, ready for the next festival.

Japan has a fascination with other cultures, but they do love their own and stick to it with fierce pride. (except when it comes to what happened in WW2. They get a bit funny about that) I'm not surprised at the Scion badge thing - it's exactly the same reasoning as why people in America want the JDM badging. (and even then, JDM badging appears in the UK/Aus/NZ, so arguably, Scion badging is more exclusive.)

Believe me, they've not lost any of their own culture. In fact, some of their cultural mannerisms are frustrating in their rigid adherence to them. (office politics and dealing with red tape being two of them)

Source for Japan waffling: Lived in Osaka for 4 years.

It's more of a mixture of modermism and tradition. That filter that you are referring to is starting to become very porous.

Perhaps, but everywhere you see traditions holding fast.

That said, as far as the car scene goes, they definitely go for overseas stylings... hell, people pay a premium to own the LHD version of a car over there, as a sign of prestige, the more exclusive option... was weird, but I saw way more American muscle in Osaka than I saw GTR's or otherwise.

We all want what we don't have and to be very honest with you. If you put the Toyota badge and the Scion badge and showed it to someone who doesn't care about the heritage of cars or has no idea what Toyota and Scion is, they'll probably choose Scion to be the one that looks better.
