Here because of me, and in science because of this:

Fusion could generate four times more energy per kilogram of fuel than fission (used in nuclear power plants) and nearly four million times more energy than burning oil or coal. (1)

The economics is a different story. If prices could get down to $25/MWh like this (2) study claims then I'm sure there will be a future for some type of fusion reactor. I don't see a long term solution for fission just based on the economics of how cheap solar and wind have gotten. Solar panels are a technology, so their price has fallen like technologies do (think computers, phones, TVs, etc). The rest are all forms of turbine technology for capturing energy, so the advancement has been flatter. Nuclear fusion could be commercialized someday. At this time, it is mostly interesting science until it is proven viable and economical.

I think our "neighbours" are making sure the UK energy prices remain sky high.. we have more wind farms and other so called "green" sources but it still costs an arm and a leg to charge my "green" car..

They would need to show that they can repeat and sustain the reaction with a net output that makes it cost effective. Lots to do.
