There's a post on the forum somewhere from a guy in US who fitted a turbo to 250bhp but he says it makes the car a pain to drive on the road as it can't properly put the power down and makes the tail very touchy

I recall reading a few reviews where they mention that a shift to 3rd is needed in order to get a true 100. In any event, running into the rev limiter will actually slow you down so it's best to shift up before that happens - which is no big deal because it pulls beautifully in 3rd

I have a nice way that I use to explain it to people. My brother and I both have lotus 7's. They both have 1600 motors (mines Ford and his is Toyota) except his is turbo'd. In a straight line his car munches mine (if you can get traction it's probably a 4 sec 0-100). Both only weigh about 600kg and have NO driver aids.
But every time I visit him, he wants to drive my car and always tells me to sell it to him. Why? Because it's way more fun. My car has a track set up so handles well like an 86 but also with my car you can put your foot flat in any gear and use the full power of the car. Also because it's NA its WAY less scary and you dont need to worry about the boost coming in mid corner etc.
Sometimes less power is a whole lot more.

Im running just 7 psi at the moment which equates to 255hp and 207 ftlbs of torque. I have a fully upgraded suspension, wider wheels and tires, clutch, and a myriad of other upgrades. Tail happy doesnt even begin to describe this car now, I know my suspension still needs some tweaking but just stepping into the throttle in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd causes wheel spin in a straight line, its fun but for the majority of people this will likely end up in much more wrecked cars. The rear end of these cars is super light so its harder to get the rear wheels to hook up.

If Subaru releases a hotter engine, a lot more engineering will have to go into the car to make it streetable. It will likely cost way more money, think WRX STi range and will be less compliant on the road than the stock car. I love my car with the turbo, and will be pushing towards 500whp soon, but it is quite a handful on the street. I still have to get my suspension tuned by a pro and will probably go with stickier tires but theres only so much you can do to get a car this light to maintain traction with more hp.
reading things like this makes me quite ok with my car as it currently is

I have all the upgrades...KW V3 Suspension, adjustable lower control arms, Vorshlag camber plates, 18" Gramlight 57Xtremes with 255/35/18 Nitto Invo tires, Clutchmasters FX400 6 puck racing clutch, Whiteline subframe inserts and positive shift bushing, etc.

I wouldn't say the car is unmanageable on the street, it's just not as forgiving as stock. The rear end breaks traction pretty easily, but I feel like I can solve a lot of that with a better suspension tune and maybe some stickier tires if need be.

Yup, think you hit the nail on the head, "forgiving" is the right word. Stock the 86 pretty much sorts things out for you. Don't have to be a great driver to feel like a great driver.
Be interested to see how it goes with better rubber etc. though.
