Agreed. Plus as time goes on more and more parts will go onto more and more cars, which means there's a better chance of actually getting to see parts in person before pulling the trigger. I'm having this exact problem with body kits, especially because you never know how they'll really look until you see em irl. I'd say your statement rings the truest for supercharger and turbocharger kits...

@Dimman, what about a linux / unix os and virtual machine? Those things aren't too hard to setup and a number of linux flavors have a UI that's pretty easy to use. Hell, in some cases you can run a linux setup off a usb thumb drive. Might be able to do some leg work if it's something you're interested in. Just need some details. Sorry for butting in on your other discussion, just made me somewhat curious.
My computer knowledge is outdated, that's all. I need to get a decent desktop setup for running some CAD software and now this cfd thing is intriguing me too. And I have no current os experience outside of the Windows that is preinstalled on my laptop.

I used to know a bit more in the DOS/Pentium era, sigh...

So a virtual machine is something like DOSBOX? The cfd will be a massive resource hog, so wouldn't it be better to run it through Linux 'normally'?

Can I have both Windows and Linux on and choose between them on boot up?

I've had the same random thought while driving just about every time I drive this car..

Why two speedometers? .. wouldn't it have been much more functional to stick another pair of half sweep guages to the left.. say, volt and oil psi or something?

From what I've read in the last minute or two, a virtual machine is like a dosbox as you've said as it's more or less an emulator. Since the application you're talking about is a resource hog, you're also correct that you may as well run it through linux directly.

You can certainly have a dual boot partition setup as far as I know. Just format a hard disk, set up a partition for your windows install and then install linux on the other. You should be able to choose which you want at boot time (there may be some tweaks here and there to make it work though, I haven't setup a dual boot system).

May have something to do with minimizing costs. In other trim models the digital speedometer isn't available so the digital gauge only shows the odo and trip meters. So they opted to have one dash cluster that they could limit where necessary.

Thinking about it that way, it makes me wonder just how much it would take to fix up the cluster to read out the digital speedo on the trims that only use the analog one.

dunno.. I didn't think of that. Good point. I figured that there's a regulation in some country that requires a analog speedo... didn't know some didn't have the digi readout.

Digital is more inaccurate and not everyone likes them. It's a love them or hate them kind of situation. But for those who do like digital numbers the digital speedo is awesome.

Dual booting is a PITA; hence the existence of VMs (huge field now). Pirating some VM software wouldn't be too hard and should hold you over until you can afford to build a Linux box (easy AND cheap).

True, I should have mentioned that but have no idea what vms are out there currently. Any suggestions or some you've had luck with?

What about something like WINE in linux but for windows to run linux apps?

As long as the power is there, a VM will do the job. I'd actually like to set one up for applications development on my current box just so I don't have to deal with the clutter of all the IDEs I use.

In essence if he sets up a VM for linux it'll take up just as much space on the disk as the linux install. As far as what limitations that may have compared to running a direct linux install, I don't know (outside of memory allocation limits and such to prevent any issues with the host OS I'd imagine?)

CFD site suggests VirtualBox, which is open source.

So a separate Linux computer is your recommendation?

What would you recommend for a Linux box? Umbuntu is the version mentioned on the CFD site.

Just wanna pass along a little bit of my thoughts on what NEIAS had going on this year. The cars that I was fairly impressed with was the Veloster, Eqqeous, MX-5 Club, Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, Jeep Brute Double cab, Beetle, Maxima, Fusion, M6, and obviously the BRZ/FRS. But the one car that stood out from the rest, imo, was the Lexus LS F Sport. That car was a real beauty and so luxurious. And I'd give the overall the best impression left for a car company at the show to Ford again. They have a very solid lineup that has something for everyone, so don't sleep on them.
The cars that left me disappointed or no real good impressions for was the IQ, Forte, and Civic SI.

Oh and @Giccin I don't know how you can drive that car you have. That Yaris is soo small, but for some reason I found the the Fit EV wasn't that bad to drive.

Yes, my recommendation is to build a cheapo-Linux box if this is something you want to pursue long-term. Spd is right with the recommendation of a VM though; I would do that first then plunker down the cash for a Linux box.

I'm not very familiar with Linux, but I've poked around Ubuntu many times. Definitely what you want as a newcomer. A Linux poweruser will call it bloated (which is kinda true), but it has the features you're looking for in an operating system WITH a friendly GUI.

I would do this, including their suggested VM. See how you like it, mess around with it for a few weeks/months then decide if a few hundred dollars is worth throwing around.
