Any chance on a DIY, or at least an overall explanation on how to?

I didn't know how simple it was to change a clutch... I would thoroughly appreciate a DIY. I'm probably going with the ACT 4 puck clutch.

How many hours did it take you?

Changing the clutch isn't hard at all really. It's just a bunch of bolts. Just make sure you have a factory service manual so you make sure you have all of the torque values correct.

The Subaru 6MT is a beast to change, I think the trans weighs about 180lbs. I also once changed the clutch in my F250 diesel, talk about a monstrosity, the flywheel itself weighs about 50lbs.

Ok this is just a heads up, I'm still reassembling everything, but got the clutch in and the tranny back in...needless to say, this is hardly something anyone can just do...

I am planning on doing a DIY, but it's gonna take a bit to get it put together and up on the forum, took a ton of pics, except for me body pressing the tranny back into the damn car...screw jacks, 83 lbs aint shit!!!

It's been an adventure filled with busted knuckles, tranny fluid everywhere (dont ask), and A LOT of four letter words being thrown around. The service manual is worthless, because it assumes you have a lift and $1000 tranny jack laying around. For those of us doing this in your home garage, this is no mean feat. But yes, you can do the entire clutch change out with 14, 12, and 10mm sockets (I recommend using 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch ratchets), a phillips head and flat head screw driver, and a pair of pliers. It's not impossible for someone to do, just have some idea of how a car is put together and you'll be fine...if you think changing tires is tough...well this is not something you should try.

I've changed the clutch in lots of FWD cars, with what Im assuming is a much tighter space, I'm actually looking forward to doing this one when the time comes. Cant wait for some pics.

This post highlights exactly why having the right tool for the right job is essential.

Oh I have the right tools, don't get all hoity toity, just because you might have access to a shop or what not. I actually used my jack to get the transmission in place, no body pressing it was a joke. The only thing that would have made this light years easier would have been a lift. How many people do you know with a lift in their personal garage?

On that note, even with my lack of the "right tools for the right job" as Orbital made it so clear...my car drives fine, the clutch works, although its gonna take some getting used to, with a 6 puck clutch you dont really slip the clutch, you can but you have to really think about it. It's also a little noisy, basically when you decelerate with engine braking you can hear the springs on the clutch rattle. The clutch pedal takes a bit of effort to press in as well, not so much that I am gonna be cramping up in rush hour traffic but its noticeably heavier than stock.

Anywho, I will be posting a DIY in the next few days for anyone who cares.

I wasn't being hoity toity...and I don't have access to a shop. I work on my garage floor with a jack and jack stands like everyone else. I'm glad you're proud of your work and the car drives well; mine does too. Your arrogance becomes you.

Seriously...my arrogance? You call me out because you feel you need to and I'm arrogant. Sigh some people these days.

Oh well can't please everyone, I try to actually contribute something to the community and there's always someone that feels the need shoot holes into it. That being said I'm done with this thread since the work is completed and I will be putting together a DIY. I will also do a review of the clutch once I get it broken in.

Merry Christmas!
