RC cars have ridiculous power : weight ratios compared to full size cars, and need all the traction they can get under power.
This is a video of my RC drift car (yes, sacrilege using an E30 M3 for that), it's AWD. If it were RWD it would just do donuts, you'd never get it moving enough to go anywhere. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkUaxPE3sQw"]Tamiya TT-01ED - BMW M3 - YouTube[/ame]

My knowledge of RC cars is next to zero. Those of you that are familiar with this hobby, what are your thoughts of the FR-S being offered by Scion? Is it a performer or something you would tire of in five minutes?

Like an all-in-one stereo system sacrifices sound quality for the convenience of being plug-in ready, so too do these HPI kits sacrifice performance for convenience. You can spend a little more money and get a lot more car. And enjoy an afternoon on your workbench with a screw driver and spray paint making something unique. To get full enjoyment out of an RC car you will want multiple batteries. And you'll want to be able to charge them quickly. These kits just come with a wall outlet that, frankly, will be slow as molasses and only able to do one battery at a time. Is it a good kit? Yes. Will it be fun? Yes. Will you ultimately want to make upgrades that could have already been accommodated by building your own car with slightly nicer components in the first place? Yes. Here's the Tamiya kit we're building... |

Altough maybe not that important with a "slow" drift car driving on parking lots and stuff. I was driving nitro powered off-road cars, doing jumps and everything. Fixing those cars have to be a part of the hobby, which is some of the reason I got tired of it. I could consider an electric drift car though, with a GT86 body. A kit without any electronics would be the best choice for me. |

Electric RC cars are where it's at. Nitro gas stuff is noisy and smelly and high-maintenance. Drifting an electric on-road vehicle is very low impact and lots of fun. |
