So when you take off from a stop at low rpm it makes the groaning noise butis otherwise smooth?

Is it a groan or a whine? Power steering pump? Turn the wheel back and forth while stopped and listen for groaning/whining.

My other buddy is all about the MoTeC, but that would cost more than I paid for the car...

And no E85 here, so have to make do with ethanol-free 94.

Awesome. Could make a good car sticker for those of us that can't get it. 'Y U no sell E85?'

Although our province is changing its AirCare program to only commercial vehicles in 2014, so I could yank the cat and run a 94 tune and a Race Gas tune... But I won't.

No, it's from the engine lol. I have electric power steering remember?

I am 100% sure it's the engine, because it's load dependent. It sounds exactly like when you slow down on a hill and your engine starts to lug (yea I should be shifting down, but I'd rather roll along for as long as possible)

Hmmm... so it could be driving style? Also it wouldn't hurt to go over the ignition parts. 1zz has a one piece coil and igniter over each plug, I think. See about taking them off and checking for cracks in the plastic and have a look at/replace the plugs while you're at it.

Also, I thought the Spyder had electro-hydraulic steering, where an electric motor turned the hydraulic pump.

No it's not driving style, engine making groaning sounds no matter what in a certain rpm range is not driving style lol. I don't think I want to slip the clutch at 1600rpm to avoid it... It's definitely from the engine, it's behind my head, and the resonance is in tune with the engine's sound. The car's vibrations also match it.

Yea it's electro-hydraulic steering, but I know the steering pump doesn't make much noise because I've disabled it and driven before.

The "gut feeling" I have is that it's knock, but I have no way of knowing this for sure since I have never heard what a knocking engine sounds like. Gonna try the deposit cleaning thing maybe tomorrow morning, if I can find a vacuum hose...

No idea. Video suggestion is the best I can do. I'll bet on a very quick and reasonably accurate diagnosis with a video. (Maybe not from me, though.)

As for knock, it's been called 'ping' in the past since that can be close to the actual sound sometimes.

Also power steering pumps can make a pretty obnoxious whining sound when they are low on fluid.

Hmm it's not a ping sound, it's like a jackhammer. But yea I'll do a crappy phone recording tomorrow or something.

It's not the power steering for sure. It's coming from behind, PS pump is in front (I wish this car had less assist..it's like playing a video game, the wheel is way too light). Besides, I had a shop do the oil change and they topped all fluids for me.

Better than nothing. I bet someone picks it out pretty quick.

My car also has 23 years of squeaks and rattles but I have the benefit of knowing 4 guys with tons of experience specific to Mk3 Supras. So anything that strikes me as odd gets sorted out pretty quick. At the beginning most of it was 'normal, it's an old car you'll get used to it'.

Haha yea, hopefully it's nothing serious. I still feel like the engine behaves a little wonky at times but maybe it's just normal. I am starting to understand why new cars are desirable...less of your ownership period is spent listening to squeaks and rattles. I'm also starting to understand the whole "interior" and "refinement" thing as well...next car I get is going to be a little more refined than this lawl.

I'm also starting to understand moditis. I want a lighter flywheel (even though the revs already drop pretty quick, blipping the throttle doesn't get revs up as fast as I want), new exhaust, new cams...list just keeps on going.
