today I had an interview for a possible new job.

Current job I've had since September 2022 has turned into a dumpster fire over the past 6 months. Long story short, my boss and this other guy my team worked with were unceremoniously laid off at the end of January, and since then it's like my team has been thrown into the meat grinder. Well, that partly started last September but it's only gotten much much worse since.

We're basically bending over to make it as easy as possible for one of our big customers so we don't lose them but everybody is running around like chickens with their head chopped off.

So I'm going to try and leave but we'll see. Otherwise I see a future (next 6-12 months) where either I'm "laid off" or the company is bought by a private firm and most are laid off to minimize OpEx. lose-lose.

Been in a similar grinder, however, client relationships great but my department head stinks and people around her **** heads.. They've been slowly dropping off leaving a select few, I am hoping will get pushed out or I will be walking...

Good luck!

That sucks. The slashing of the DOE budget just got my fiance laid off a few weeks ago from the Education Technology company she worked for.

Sucks because she really liked the job, what they were doing, and the people she worked with.

Man, it's an effing mess. I don't know a single place anyone I know works at that's doing fine.

I even touched base with coworkers from two jobs ago that I left in Jan 2020 and they said it's chaotic and crappy there too these days. Otherwise I would've tried going back as a referral. It's nuts.

Good luck to you also.

Honestly, the worst. Most of these orgs are really needed, especially for education. I'm still pissed off about the National Weather Service cuts also.

Not counting that cute girl down at the 7-11 where you went to get sushi?

The job market here in the Great White North isn’t much better. I understand that where ever you go you will run into co-workers and bosses that you cannot get along with. In most cases the job is rewarding enough that people are willing to put up with the crap. That is not the case these days.
I put up with a ton of shit that most people would have walked away from. The company started by reducing my work load and authority. Followed by freezing my wages and then reducing my wages as they cut back my hours. This all to try and get me to quit. I made the mistake of saying that as long as they were signing my checks I’d be showing up for work. So without cause and without notice I was terminated.
I know I’ve gone on about this before but it still pisses me off. The company was in the wrong but was prepared to pay tens of thousands of dollars more in fines, legal fees and a large “out of court” settlement rather than save that money and allow me to work two more years until retirement age.
In the end the company was sold to an Asian group and last I heard was barely keeping afloat.

No doubt. I'm right in the middle of tornado alley here in OKC. And it's been fairly busy with storms so far this year.

All these agencies have way more employees than needed to do the job.

I can tell you from experience working for government for 30 years is the only thing they do well is waste money. It's disgusting. Way too many workers, and most not employable in the private sector because they are garbage. And when they allowed gov workers to unionize, they became so strong that you couldn't fire even the most incompetent workers.

Years of waste is like years of cancer growth. Surgery is painful, but needed.

We had 200 employees in our finance department. We had a big CPA firm come in once to help us. First thing they said see we had too many employees, and that a private hospital would be doing the same job with 50. So true.

At my old job I kept getting more work load for same pay without additional authority because they can’t figure out how to hire the appropriate people for the job. Two years before I left the purchasing manager quit, a year after that the shop manager quit and they fired the accounting assistant. Then I quit almost two years ago. All positions still not filled and they are a year from the accounting manager retiring.

We pay well and we can’t keep people at some branches because the job is “too hard”. At the branch I work at most of us are 40-50 with one who is 60 with almost zero turnover.

I think a reasonable, objective third-party outside government and who releases the data they used to make those decisions should be the judge of that.

I started my office career with the Ministry of Revenue, Assessment Office. We were in charge of property assessments for tax purposes. I started as an Assistant to the Assessors but moved into the drafting room up dating area maps. I quit because I could not put up with burocratic BS, in fighting and promotion of the incompetent.
I took a contract job doing similar work for the City in the Planning and Development office. The first job I had was to update city maps with new subdivisions. The same subdivisions I’d just finished for the Assessment Office. When I suggested that the city could save thousands of dollars by asking for copies of the provincial maps for the city I was shut down right quick. I saw this type of duplication of work in every office. I was not popular and my contract was not renewed.
It was a tough lesson to learn and one that seemingly will never change. All governments, municipal, provincial and federal seem to be in the business of making work for themselves oh and staying in power!
