COST REDUCTION!

My first car (1948 Chevrolet) had a speedometer, a fuel gauge, a temperature gauge and an amp meter. The AM radio had two knobs, one to turn it on and off and the other to tune into one of the three stations available (on a clear night).

I got along just fine - lots of time to pay attention to DRIVING the damn car!

Nothing is stopping you from going back to one of those. Well, except all 1983 Chevys have probably (and hopefully!) been destroyed by this point LOL.

So... is this thing any closer to being revealed in a production spec? ICE, hybrid, or EV? Or is the whole thing just a giant tease, yet more concepts that never reach production?

From what Toyota seems to be doing, they're making the transition to full hybrids before embracing full EV. So I'm guessing this will be hybrid. Their recent concepts seem to be production models hiding in plain sight...they just don't end up being what they were shown conceptually (like that big EV reveal they did about a year or 2 ago, almost all those "ev concepts" were actual production cars, just not all EV)
As long as Akio Toyoda still has power I'm guessing we're going to see it in production form one way or another. Dude likes his fun cars/sports cars.

This assumes they actually go into production with it, and if so it isn't a Japan only special. I'll be honest, as much as I'd love a new MR2, especially if small, light and affordable, I still see no real business case for it unless Toyota.jp just have money to burn for some reason.

That's as may be, and I'm very grateful he got the 86, Supra, and GR Yaris/Corolla projects through, but he may well have used up his stash of corporate goodwill with them. I can see it now, the board and shareholders saying 'Why Toyoda-san, why yet another RWD sports car? You have enough already!'

Well with the recent scandals involving Hino and Daihatsu, i think that may have given him some more rope to work with. So what do you do with the cheating execs that tarnished those brands? Im sure hes sick of apologizing for everything that keeps popping up one way or another and wants to clean house. The current CEO is Koji Sato, and hes kind of like Akio's right hand man so im sure he's on the same page, and he's the one ultimately with the power to make moves i'd think.
