We are going to be in this house much longer than we anticipated. But it's a very nice home, in a quiet neighborhood, so I can't really complain too much.

Summing up the strange tangent this thread has gone......
If we were to apply what is currenty being said to the question of the OP..... Any good reason to stick with a 1st gen? Yeah, cuz its cheaper and we wont be up to our eyeballs in debt getting one (even though a second gen isnt priced out of reach, there upwards of about 10g worth of cash in pocket with a first gen vs second gen) |

Unfortunately, many Americans have become accustomed to spending past what they can actually afford. And I use afford deliberately, there is massive difference between being able to buy something and being able to afford something.

A starter home is around 450K. It's out of reach for most. The younger people are being left out. It's a completely different animal now. |

We've been sold out to the banks. Banks cause crisis in 2008, should never have bailed them out. Bailouts should have been for the homeowners. Basically, *their* crisis resulted in massive turnover of homes and other properties from people, to banks. They have literally taken over. Oligarchy... We need to make bribery illegal, outlaw any corporate political spending.

I realize you are in Canada, but that is very localized (starting home price). Within 20 miles of my zip code in Georgia there are over 400 homes (single family homes) listed under $200,000. Some of them are fixer-uppers, but most are move in ready as starter homes.

Up here you don't get anything in the 200,000 range unless its a condo. But the unit size you can get with that price is slowly getting smaller. |

Housing prices are out of control. The only place that is really affordable is straight north several hours where there's no work. Of course, the locals can't afford the homes. |
