Question OEM 22 Oil Cooler

Hello everyone,

I was researching oil coolers for my brz. I stumbled upon this video.

He uses a 22 BRZ oil cooler part number 21311AA220.

anyone have experience doing this mod?
what are the temps looking like?
Is this mod good for track use or just use oil cooler like perrin/skunk2 ?

It's similar to the Forester oil cooler that has been talked on the forums for a decade.
It is not enough for track use in high ambient temp days in my opinion.
A standard well placed/ducted oil cooler will be more effective for track use.

Second this. Seems like it would definitely help if you had high temps while daily driving in hot weather although for the cost it's more likely worth it to purchase a quality aftermarket cooler with a radiator and proper cooling loop.

I've been thinking about doing this mod for my autocrossed BRZ, possibly when moving up to STX from street class.

The real benefit to a kit like this is being OEM, but also that it's more of an engine oil warmer and cooler. Warms it up to get your oil temp where it needs to be for your first run or just quicker when street driving. Also cools things down a bit, but not as much as a dedicated oil cooler.

I don't like oil coolers for street cars because the oil temp takes too long or never gets up to where it should be depending on the kit. Also, it's another line to get clogged, hose to come off, or rock to hit the cooler in the front and boom, there goes oil pressure and your oil... and engine.

This is a pretty tame kit, but work, just don't expect tons of cooling. I think I saw a video and it was like 10 degrees or so when romping on it in the canyons or heavy street use. Given you're not a track hitting 260+ degrees, the max you should be hitting is about 230-240.

So eh. I couldn't justify the cost vs the 10 degrees or so it was doing on the videos I watched. Maybe in the future.

I have both the Forester heat exchanger and the Jackson Racing oil cooler stacked on my 2019 BRZ. Quick warm-ups and good cooling at the top end. However I swapped the thermostat with mishimoto's 200F thermostat because the Jackson Racing ~185F thermostat opens way too soon - overcooling the oil during highway cruising.

To address the concern about stone chips damaging the core, I installed a mesh grille in the bumper opening to block bigger objects from hitting the oil cooler and radiator.

I have it. Temps are the same as without it but doesn't go high in spike like no having it (think as a buffer). Not bad at all considering you could source parts locally at dealership

has anyone attempted a finned aluminum oil pan? i would figure the gains would be pretty close.

Or work the opposite absorbing all the heat from everyone’s un coated and un wrapped headers!

I used an aluminum, multi-fined product available from RHD Japan that can stick to any metal surface with a special heat transfering glue. Lots of fins with a ton more surface area, covered my oil pan. It made no difference.

A heat sink needs a good temperature differential to work. I insulated my pan, that worked.
