2nd gen vs an Edelbrock supercharged 1st gen?
So has there been a good comparison video made of a 2nd gen vs an Edelbrock supercharged 1st gen with a good tune? Preferbly a '17-'20 BRZ w/ PP..
I know there was a short video of a couple of pulls side by side, but haven't really seen anything else.. Looking for something like this, but of a well tuned Edelbrock supercharged car, instead of a turbo car..

Haven't made a video or anything, but I have both a 2023 GR86 and a 2017 BRZ with PP and Edelbrock SC in my garage right now
It's not the most direct comparison as the 86 is stock and the BRZ is a full-on track car, but after driving and autocrossing both they feel like they make similar-ish power. The BRZ with supercharger definitely pulls harder in the higher RPMs and is overall faster. The 86 definitely has more torque down low... the BRZ sometimes can feel a bit boggy if the RPMs drop too much, but it screams up high. I think the torque difference makes the 86 feel quicker than it is... the BRZ put down 250whp on the dyno so my sense is it might actually be quicker everywhere, but the 86 definitely gives the impression of pulling harder in the lower RPM range. We might have both of them out at the track later in the year and can run them down the drag strip to get more of a proper comparison. |

That is interesting, I thought the supercharger would pull hard at lower rpms (verses a turbo for say), so surprised the GR86 still feels stronger on the bottom end.
Since the BRZ is a track car, is it tuned for more high end HP? I assume you are not running the Edelbrock CARB tune.. Thanks for the feedback, and definitely let us know if you get to run them head-to-head..

The Edelbrock uses an Eaton 1320, which is a Multi-Screw Roots compressor, same as many OEMS (like Audi/Jaguar) use, or have used in the past. My understanding is that these tend to produce more boost at low RPM than Centrifugal style superchargers, that tend to produce more on the upper end..

And... it's definitely a bit tricky to compare. The BRZ definitely pulls harder up top. But the sensations are so different between the two cars... one is a full stock street car with stock seats, belts, and a catback. The other is stripped, caged, stiff, you're strapped into 6 point harnesses in a halo seat, and it's straight piped with only a single cat to quiet it down. So it might just not FEEL as rowdy down low Definitely gotta do a pull or two with both of them sometimes to compare. |

Anyone interested in us doing an Edelbrock kit for the gen 2? We were the ones that did the ND2 Miata Edelbrock kit (we are an Edelbrock engineering partner). If anyone is local to us in the California Bay Area, shoot us an email... or if you are simply interested in seeing an Edelbrock roots supercharger on the Gen 2 - holler!

I almost feel Gen 2 Engine swap + Flex Fuel would be the better bet. Cost more but I am seriously considering doing this. Gen 1 + Gen 2 engine would be the tits!
