The interior is one thing I can confidently point to being polar opposites. The 3 is very refined and nice, Corolla is uh, basic. I feel cramped in a Mazda 3 though, and the Corolla hatch feels spacious up front. Back seat in Corolla is tight but I never sat in the back of a 3. Looks like it would also feel tight. Barely any window haha

Yeah, I was thinking more like fun to drive given that it has some semblance of AWD, plus turbo (although no MT sucks).

With the positive difference being the higher quality interior?

I agree about the back. I haven't sat in a Corolla, but my dad has a 2016 (iirc) Mazda 3 hatch and the back does feel pretty cramped. Not as bad as the twins because the passenger at least has enough space they can move the seat up quite a bit and the person behind them won't feel squished. But the person behind the driver is definitely squished unless one or both are tiny lol.

The extra one can be switched between fart noises and EV fake engine sounds.

He specifically mentioned the Mazda3 with AWD and turbo 2.5 engine. Yet for some reason you bring up the 185 hp non-turbo model for reference?

I think I had this topic come up talking with @Tcoat. The 2019 Mazda 3 Hatch sits 4 adults very comfortably. Im 5'11 and so its Mrs Mafia, her Brothers are little over 6'2 and they have comfortably ridden in the back. Seems like the Hatch has a little more extra headroom than a Sedan.

Mazda interior design is superb, if their Turbo lineup offered a 6-Speed Man I would instantly get it.

Someone I know locally has been offered a GRC with $5000 ADM. This specific car doesn't have the Performance Package. I've been telling him to pass. Told him he's crazy to spring for it.

Mazda seems to be missing out on a huge opportunity here with their 2.5 Turbo engine. But they have strayed so far out of the Hot Hatch business that I don't see it happening.

Like mentioned above, Mazda and their 3 is more of a daily driver, fuel efficient, semi-luxury focused car. You should see the amount of sound dampening they install. The hood itself also, weights a ridiculous amount.

Would they strip all of that, add a 6 speed manual, and somehow Tune their SkyActiv-G Engine for less restrictive specs, maybe, just maybe the GR would have competition. But no, it is not in their plans.

especially since it seems like they're trying to get away from the mainstream segment and move upmarket into the near lux segment where Acura, Buick, etc reside.

I believe they even fit a brand new inline-6 into their biggest SUV coming up soon.

Meanwhile they did bring the Dorito back, but as in-board generator to their electric vehicle.. I guess it is something.
