The filter in the GR86 is only used in the GR86! Unfortunately I can see warranty denial based just on the wrong filter.

Really sorry to hear, @dreamwonder. If there's a chance the data on overrev was bogus I would do all I could to fight that. Maybe have a second dealer look at it, if that's a thing that can be done now.
The oil definitely didn't have anything to do with it. Filter, I'm not sure. I didn't realize 1st gen had a different oil filter. 2nd gen uses same PN as my WRX which was a nice bonus as I had a bunch. I doubt they would have been able to tell that oil was 0w30 from a UOA considering it had a few track miles on it. Maybe if it was brandy-new I guess. These engines shear oil down a grade in less than 1000 miles (or at least the turbo FAs do.. not sure about NA.) *edit* I see he told them, so that 'splains it. |

Of course it's growing. One could say that about every car model ever made.

Even if you take that number to 100 it comes out to just over .5% of the sales (BRZ and GR86 combined) Not cool and certainly unpleasant but not the ravaging plague it appears to be either.

Of what we do know there were 4 (including Dream) where the over rev was held against the owner as at least a partial cause. The first was the guy that eventually got a new engine, two of the videos and now Dream. I would be more inclined to lean towards overrev if the main issue was thrown rods over spun bearings though. Rods don't do well with sudden rev increases but bearings are more likely to spin because of lubrication. Not to say that it can't happen but just isn't as probable. This is why I wondered what Dream's actual failure was.

I'd need to see the actual ratio, but I don't think 5th at 8300 RPM supports 129 mph.

That got my attention too. Gear selection is calculated by the ECU only with enough sampled vehicle, and engine speed data while the clutch pedal is released. I'm thinking this was a money shift into third but for that brief moment, the ECU did the best it could with garbage input. Educated guesswork is bullshit until verified.
