Absolutely no part of that entire situation sounds legit.

Whereas, his dealership goes through a broker, and SOA has nothing to do with the order, hence why I also got zero info when I contacted SOA also. I have no idea if this is true or not, but until proven otherwise, I have no choice but to believe him.
It's very frustrating to not know anything while almost 3 months into the order process. If I knew how that dealership worked, I would have just gone to a dealership that works directly with SOA. At this point, I just have to hope that the car shows up one day by surprise. If not, I have to also hope that I'm one of the first with a 2023 model. Unfortunately, they stopped accepting orders for BRZ's on the same day that my order got "accepted" (I placed the order for 2 BRZ's (mine and my brother's) about a week before that).
I am going to keep my eye on the dealership, and if I see that they deliver another BRZ before mine (I was next on the list that they showed me), I'm going to flip out.

I'm suspicious that they are holding my order because they wanted $3,000 over MSRP, and had a lot of apprehension about giving me the car for MSRP. so I started to think that they are holding my order in their back pocket, while selling their allocation for now at above MSRP. Once the market cools off and they can't get above MSRP, then they put my order in. I really hope that I am wrong since I buy a lot of cars, and bought 2 last year from their sister BMW dealership. If they did that to me, not only did they lose me as a customer, but they will lose a lot of my friends as well. Additionally, I also love to share my stories on car related forums (both positive, and negative). Keeping fingers crossed for now
Well one thing I can confirm for you is that the bit about them being different from SOA is true, assuming your dealer is in Rhode Island. They likely fall under Subaru of New England, which works like one giant Subaru dealership with 60+ locations. So I'm not surprised things are a little wonky. But if you have a legit order, there would absolutely be someone that could give you an update on it.

Up4speed. That doesn't sound right at all. Did you place the order while in the dealer? When I did I received a print out of the order right away. VON came a couple of days later hidden in a Love Charity email.

I see you are on Long Island, this isn't that dealership in Hicksville is it? It's a shame Metric Subaru isn't around any more.

You just might find that having some more civilized refinements built in is not that much of a compromise.

Seeing a BRZ orphaned on a lot has to be a rare sight. In April 2018 I went to see a 2017 BRZ (built 10/17) in stock and ten minutes later I wrote a check for it. I waited five years to get one due to a combination of circumstances, but I wasn't going to wait a minute longer. Never an ounce of regret. I ordered the 2022 BRZ on 11/30/21, it was built 01/22 and was delivered 03/23/22. I am only a 90 minute truck transport drive from the Vancouver, Washington port where incidentally, the Subaru cars from the Indiana plant arrive by train. A couple of days ago I met a guy when I stopped by the hardware store to get license plate screws. He asked me about my BRZ and told me that he put in a request for a GR86 back last October. He said that there has been not a peep out of Toyota, but one dealer that he had contacted earlier called him that they could get one, but it was way off from what he wanted so he passed that up. How sad it that?
You're right, track isn't a consideration for me at this time. The reason I called it wrong transmission is because I know what this car is and how it should be enjoyed to its fullest. I think this is my 30th or so car and have had things like s2000 and integra type R long time ago so buying an automatic BTZ felt....odd. But, you're right, I walked in saw it and couldn't resist. It certainly way more fun to drive so far than my last few cars.

If what they say in the automotive press is true about dealerships in the future not having a big floor-plan and most sales being customer orders, then they are going to have to do a better job of committing to the sale and providing status updates. My first call was to the dealer where I bought my 2017 BRZ. They were happy to order me one for MSRP plus a market adjustment of $3,000. I then went to the more local dealer and showed them my build from the Subaru website that came to about $34,000 in round numbers. "We will sell you that car for MSRP." and they took my order and handed me printout. I gave them a deposit for $1,000. Taking into consideration everything going on in the market, I am good with that. A completely different vibe going on there in the sales department; new sales manager? In 2018 the manager there was so inflexible that I felt like they did not care if I walked out the door. I went to a different dealer and that year I bought a new BRZ and an Ascent elsewhere. Something else I learned while picking up my new BRZ last week. The extras stuff I ordered was installed by the dealer and not at the port as was done previously. I think it is because it is more efficient now to remove the extra layer of vehicle processing and have the dealer more involved with the pre-delivery. Makes more sense from a dealer perspective as they have an opportunity to up-sell on options at the point of sale. At the last minute I did go for something, but only what I saw as 'value added' for me.

And hey, how do I make those ads for women's swimwear go away where it appears above where I am typing? First of all, I am not a cross-dresser and secondly, I am not familiar with any women that skinny. Around here we are pretty well fed. I would rather see an ad for beer or hardware stores. They all look so happy in those pictures, but to be that skinny, they would have to be hungry all the time. I know I would be impossible to live with. As a matter of fact, I am going to feed the dog and I know there is already beer in the fridge. Then I am going to get in my BRZ and zip down the road and pick up a pizza. Life is good. Hey there skinny girl, want a slice?

I'm not in Rhode Island, I'm from Long Island, NY. I went into the dealership to order, they gave me a purchase agreement, and they cashed my deposit of $2,500

I placed the order in the dealership, an received a purchase order, and they cashed my deposit. It's not the Hicksville dealership. I also checked in and spoke to the manager, as well as the salesman, and neither one can give me any info at all. They just blame covid.

Man, I feel for you on this one. If you dont have the car in the next couple of weeks Id be looking to back out of that deal. Even if everything is legit, and they have some bizarre system for ordering cars that is different from how every other order I've heard of works, they should have at least disclosed to you their process and set some decent expectations.

Can you work with SoA and try to confirm that their method of ordering cars is legit?

Hope it all works out, please update us either way. And while this does sound pretty fucked up, at least take comfort in that this is the standard experience for every single person who buys a GR86.

12/13: Car was ordered
1/4: Received port date of 5/14 but no VON (kind of strange?)
1/15: Received email from SOA with my VON (email was about the Share the Love event, not specifically to provide me with the VON)
2/1: Update from dealer saying no new info
2/28: Update from dealer saying no new info

I'm East Coast and ordered a Limited 6MT in Ignition Red. Seeing all these posts of cars spontaneously showing up was giving me hope my timeline would move up from May, but looks like I'll have to keep waiting! Oh well

Got my VIN and an updated port date today! So my timeline so far has been:

9/30: Put deposit down, asked dealer to time order so that car shows up in March
12/13: Car was ordered
1/4: Received port date of 5/14 but no VON (kind of strange?)

2/1: Update from dealer saying no new info
2/28: Update from dealer saying no new info
4/8: Received VIN and updated port date of 4/29

Getting really excited now, it's finally starting to feel real. And happy to have some good news, my Outback died rather unexpectedly last week so this was a nice update!

I already tried to go to SOA for any info that they can supply, and they couldn't verify anything at all with my order. They even called the dealer on my behalf!
Some (sort of) good news. My brother and I ordered cars at the same time. 2 Days ago, he received a call that the process is beginning, and he got a VON# for his car. So I guess there is hope for me, and it's probably just a lot of confusion with the strange ordering system, as well as covid delays, etc.
I will follow up here as soon as I get a VON, or any info at all. This wait is TORTUROUS!

Called Subaru today. My order from late December is still showing a May 2022 ETA. To be honest, I'm thinking of checking out the local Ford dealer tomorrow. The have a new Eco-Boost Mustang that just came in.

I ordered late November and the car was delivered in about 16 weeks. I am an hour and a half from the Vancouver, Washington port. The transit time to the east coast has to be a bit more. Our Ascent came to the same port by rail from Indiana. What cars built in Japan are loaded on the empty rail cars if any and how far are they transported? They don’t necessarily have to be Subaru cars, but a certain number of empty rail cars have to get back to the Indiana plant. I guess rail vs. ship depends on the region in the U.S.

In any case, I think your car is almost there. Don’t give up just yet. There is nothing special about the Mustang, they are everywhere. But, I you like the Mustang and and when you spot a BRZ on the road you don’t have pangs of regret, then it would be ok.
