They did, the gunmetal ones didn't suffer from the same issues as the black rs2.0 ones that had the pvd finish. It wasn't the paint but the metalic clear coat finish that gave it a mirror like shine. It usually lasts less than a year or 2 before flaking off. I've gotten my first set warranty replaced last year and the replacement wheels are already flaking pretty significantly now. toyota canada claims this isn't a widespread issue while online communities beg to differ. I guess those that had issues never reported to toyota so that a file could be built up.

since the gunmetal ones were never available in Canada, I may email toyota Canada this spring with pictures after 1 season on the replaced wheels how much they are flaking. I mean these wheels are tested in canada prior to having been greenlit for it's availability in our market so there's no excuse that the finish fails to stay on the pain in Canadian weather. It baffles me how toyota canada still denies this is a widespread issue and originally wanted to say it was caused by rock chips on the road. nope.
RS 2.0 had black wheels PTR2018160BK that came with the flimsy ass PVD finish to achieve that mirror black look Gunmetals PTR2018160GR were gunmetal with regular clear coating. They came as a dealership option i believe along with the facelift first gens. These wheels were solid and did not have the same flaking issues as the black ones since they didn't use PVD

If I'm going out to strictly buy wheels aftermarket , my first choice is Rays /Volk.
There are cast wheels in the Rays line ... I haven't heard anything bad about them, but given the price they are probably the creme de la creme of cast wheels. I'm not going to say what you should /shouldn't buy , but I'll warn against Rota. I've heard enough horror stories on those wheels, most models.

If the finish fades , peals , then one can at least powder coat them a color you'd be more happy with, and the finish should be at least 10x more durable.
Has anyone used these Enkei forged wheels hard... drifting hard (not hitting curbs sideways), 50k+ miles , to see more long term durability real world testing ? Any cracks / breaks ?

I think some people call flow forming flow forging or rotary forging then end up using the term "forged" when they are not truly forged with the large expensive presses that only a handful of manufacturers have.
Given the weight of these TRD/GR forged 17" wheels, I would assume that they are likely rotary forged. Too bad they never always disclose who manufacturers their parts. I know sometimes they do as the zenki 6pot/4pot trd bbk's were brembos and their SF2 18" wheels were manufactured by TWS Which manufacturers actually press forge wheels? I know of Rays, TWS, and BBS off the top of my head, are there more?

There is no such thing a, “flow forging”. That’s a marketing gimmick to make people feel better about buying a cast wheel. |

Every cast wheel I've come across, whether OEM or aftermarket, will have features on the back side that are obviously cast. Machining is typically limited to a few critical surfaces. See the first photo. The gray TRD wheels have no cast features at all. The entire hub, including the relief pockets, is machined. The only markings are engraved on the barrel. That leads me to believe they are forged and not cast. Most likely they are billet forged and not die forged.

Toyota GR86 - Bronze 17inch alloys

So you’re a materials scientist? Yea I didn’t think so. Flow forming aligns the crystal structure of the barrel through heat and pressure. It’s not the same as forging but it gives you much much better material properties on the barrel than a cast wheel. The barrel is the most highly stressed part of the wheel so it helps a lot. I’ve bent almost every aftermarket cast wheel I’ve owned. I’ve never bent a flowformed wheel. My Apex wheels on my BMW have taken a beating that sometimes I was convinced they would be bent. They’re still perfectly straight and true. Quote:
Not necessarily, but I could be wrong. Just because the pockets on the back are CNC cut doesn’t mean the wheels are forged. It could simply be that they make a 4 lug version of that wheel as well. I highly doubt Toyota would offer a forged wheel for this car. You can probably count the number of cars that have OEM forged wheels available on 2 hands. Are these hits damaging tires? Are you hitting potholes? Super short sidewalls? I've never seen a damaged car wheel that came from normal use and not an "incident".

If the TRD wheels aren't forged, they've got a lot of explaining to do.
