Whenever I wonder whether it's the right decision, I just imagine the FA24 potentially making 230+ whp on E85 and that usually settles my mind lol.

Some things I've accepted will always be objectively slightly worse (steering feel, overall weight gain). Some changes are subjectively worse but I'm hopeful I'll grow to like them over time (digital gauge cluster, exterior styling). But overall I'm confident the improvements to the engine are going to outweigh any of the negatives above.
Eventually you will get to test drive a manual.

I'd reserve any judgements until you get a chance. For instance I thought the steering would be worse going from reviews, and it probably popped out the most because I actually had that odd sensation of feeling like the car was moving before I was steering.. So instant. That and the new brake feel - where it requires more purpose to push but then feel really really rewarding and as you stomp and the car just pulls in hard and so progressively with your input. Input to car action is just great fun and a little bit above the OG in my personal opinion. This isn't actually all about the power.

I should note I only have experience in the very first year car - no performance packages and such.

^This, that’s what I didn’t like. It felt too light to me, maybe you’d get used to it over time.

Yeah I've pretty much committed to switching to the new platform. My order should be here in May. Looking forward to it, but also trying to set my expectations realistically. I'll definitely write up some thoughts when it comes. Glad to hear you're enjoying the new one!

That's me - catless headers, tune, e85 (well not now - but in the summer). I also spent $350 to tint and close to $800 on the stereo. The good news is the headers I will just reuse (eventually) and hope that I can reuse (or at least sell) the OFT. I am taking out a lot of the stereo as well.

It was a tough call, but given the price I can get under the Toyota employee program ($29,800 incl. mats, homelink, and PPF for Premium Neptune MT - all in except sales tax) and what I can get for my current car ($28,000 for 2020 Premium WRB BRZ MT with 33,000 miles - more than I paid for it), it was pretty much a no-brainer.

It still annoys me greatly that since I am not trading in my car to the dealer I am buying from that I will need to pay about $2,500 in sales tax, but those are the breaks. What I get back, a brand new car in the color I have ALWAYS wanted, with wheels I actually like (and brand new tires), not to mention a 2 year newer model car with 0 miles, makes up for it - even including the additional money I will need to spend on tint, a tune, and, probably, stereo upgrades.

I expect that the new car will feel faster to me than my old one even with the tune/e85 as I spend most of my time between 2000 - 5000 rpms. And I will be waiting patiently for that tune to reinstall the headers which I expect to be close to amazing.

That’s an amazing price with the Toyota employee discount! I’d do the same in your shoes. The current used market is what convinced me as well. I’d debated between white and red back in 2012. Bought white, going to try red this time around.

yup. I will test drive a manual second gen when my dealership gets one in. I will likely get one(preferably used one in several months) and keep both. I'm also looking for a AE86, if I end up finding a good one I will definitely get the 2nd gen so I'll have all 3 86's. Only concern now is parking space

Plan is to modify second gen if I get it and keep all existing mods on first gen.

Thanks for all your replies!

This !

After all the back and forward about the pros and cons of new and old I went and stood next to a gen 2 yesterday for the first time in person and.....no.

It looks bloated compared to the more sleek gen 1, to my eyes anyway.
Its a shame because I was keen on upgrading as it seems like a great package so probably need more time to get use to it the new shape I guess.

But at the moment I am boarder line on the "its ugly" camp.

Personally I always thought the old ones were immaturely styled and made for kids but I suppose that was also the target audience. I’ve never even considered the twins until Gen 2 came out. The new ones matured and I absolutely love the styling and overall package improvements.

The new car looks more transformer-y to me though I don't think it looks bad to begin with. Shit, I don't mind the Type R

Ffs I hate bs manufacturing claims like that, you’d likely get the same amount of power increase by farting in the front seat.

Interesting for a stock to stock comparison you felt the same steering difference that I did. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, steering and brakes. Unfortunately the test drive was with an auto and with a sales guy so I didn't both really testing out the power - seemed smooth.

Also, people are saying the wheel is a carry over.... but in my first year car I swear the wheel was a bit bigger and harder to touch. This thing you can really squeeze in, like its got some kind of latex rubber under the leather - and is so tiny. I was pretty excited after getting out.

Yeah it is, the 13 to 16s have a larger steering wheel. The +17s have a smaller steering wheel with buttons. I believe the +17 steering wheel was carried over to the 2nd gen.
