You can call it whatever you want but Toyota calls it a duckbill:
Design

Handles sharp. Looks sharp. With its refined aerodynamic profile, GR 86 returns with a sleek new design, inside and out. An aero stabilizing front bumper and available rear duckbill spoiler help it slip through the wind while keeping your connection to the road a little tighter. Inside, a 3-mode digital instrumentation panel and leather-trimmed touchpoints highlight GR 86's driver-focused cockpit. The fold-down rear seats make room for extra passengers or extra track tires.

Well it looks more like a ducktail than a duckbill to me.

No argument here, just stating how the manufacturer refers to it.

100%

Gen 1 styling was a nod to the past e.g. Toyota 2000GT..

e.g. at the 2012/13 intro Toyota originally displayed the Gen 1 along side an original AE86, the 2000GT, and the Sports 800

Spot on, styling of a 2000gt, boxer like the sports 800, affordable RWD like a AE86. I remember following the project like a mad man

I think toyota made a great starting spot for a sports car.

I dont think it really looks like any of those past cars, perhaps hints of each, but the lines were pretty different. Its a different era now.

Looks more like a Daffy Duckbill spoiler to me. Toyota probably couldn't call it that for copyright reasons.

Wow. that is a massive difference. Even the A pillar/hood/fender transition on by BMW looks like a mess compared to that.

Compared to:

I remembered Sanjeev Mehta made that exact point about that A-pillar mess (despite loving the rest of the car).
Plus getting rid of the fake-vent for a real one is always a win.

Looking at those numbers it makes a pretty compelling argument to upgrade. Only thing stopping some people is they might not like the look of it.

Performance wise, its definitely an upgrade, but even Toyota can't make it pretty. This is directly off their website configurator page. Ugmm...no thanks.

(and for those that think it looks great, I'm glad you like it)

Well, back in the day I really didn't like the '17 BRZ when I saw Subaru's official photos,
and didn't like it in red in particular when I saw it in the online configurator (there were very few photos in red).
And yet a red '17 BRZ is the car I decided to buy when I saw it in person for the first time.

The GR 86 has been reviewed by so many YouTubers, I think the car in those videos
looks a lot closer to reality than in the static "plastic" renders in the online configurator.
