My car was fine before the recall fiasco. I have a LOT of friends with Subaru's and Not one has experienced reliability issues. They are Outbacks. Forresters mostly. I think the twins have so many issues is due to the predominantly younger crowd getting em and not maintaining properly and\or abusing the car. Then they either complain or sell then the next guy gets it when it was on the edge of it's reliability life and has issues then it's Subaru's fault.

but it leaked trans fluid at a rate that sometimes limited movement to 1st gear. it also had no heat, or a/c, and the interior puddled when it rained... but it never failed to start up.

To be fair, if I bought anything from Chevrolet (except established future mid engine Corvettes), Ford or Chrysler it'd be only a truck but never a car. I've become spoiled with 13 & 7 completely trouble free years with my Toyota and Honda coupes. |

Never buy a GMC pickup again
Quote:
My 2005 GMC Canyon (5 cyl) had a "head problem". The head was replaced at around 40,000 miles in a recall/warranty campaign. When the truck turned 50,000 miles the dealer "flushed" the 4L60E 4 spd transmission (I let him at his recommendation, BIG mistake!). They didn't tighten the hose clamp on the radiator connection (trans cooler built into the rad). It dumped all of its trans fluid in the first 15 miles. Lo and behold, a year later, the transmission failed and I had to pay for a new one. (Yeah I tried arguing) I traded the truck in at 80,000 miles for a 2012 Yaris SE 5-speed, which was replaced in 2014 by my first FR-S. The pickup bed was just fine! I will never buy a vehicle from that dealer again. |

It is very unfortunate that OP went through all this, but I'm left wondering about a few things.
Did OP buy it knowing that it had an excessively noisy motor from the start? Perhaps he thought it was normal, but it really could've been a clue from the start that valve clearances were off. Improper valve clearances are rarely subtle. I'm wondering if the intake cam gear jumped a tooth or was it set that way on the assembly line? Or better yet.. Maybe someone else had it apart before the car was purchased? Am I understanding this right in that he had the job done 2 months after he bought the car? No additional warranty was offered from the dealer? Not even a short term one? That alone was a massive risk OP took, even if it was a low mileage car. Buying a car without any warranty is always a risk regardless of make and model. I'll also echo what others have been saying. Not every single car produced is going to be perfect. Even well known reliable models are known to have some rare defects sometimes or have some bad days on the assembly line. Unfortunately, some people just draw the short straw when it comes to buying cars. |
