(However, ignore the fact that AP2s had an increased displacement of 2.2 liters in some markets, lol. ) I'm not opposed to the S2000 successor having a different name, but if it does it should follow the naming convention that Honda has always had for 2 door RWD roadsters.

For the sake of clarity, I also don't think there is much substance to the article but I had seen it discussed elsewhere and thought it was worth mentioning here.

I think the key words in the article are
"According to a source close to Honda..." meaning, not from Honda itself. Honda is probably the most iconic, legendary, storied Japanese car company. They've gone through some truly unbelievable ups and downs in terms of having and losing their mojo. Back in the 80s/90's/early 2000s they were at the top of their game with a string of unbeatable cars... CRX, Prelude, Accord, and culminating in the S2000. Then they lost it for many years. They seemed to be beginning to get it back, but I think are losing it again. They recently cancelled the Civic Si Coupe (and the Coupe in general), which was probably their brightest up-and-coming star from the enthusiast's perspective, as well as canned the manual transmission in the Accord, another former bright spot. Now the next-generation Civic looks like a shrunken Accord. I absolutely loved my S2000, and deeply regret selling it. I'd love to see a new one. But if they can't even see their way clear to keeping the Civic Coupe, how likely is it that their apparently re-growing conservatism will be willing to spend the money and time to develop a specialty sports car for a small and shrinking niche market? |

I agree with you, but it's worth noting that they didn't cancel the Si models. The next generation Civic is about to go on sale, and the Si models will follow. It wasn't canceled. It's just like when a new generation of 911 comes out, there's a year (or 2) lag before the GT3/Turbo models come out. They don't cancel them.
Honda will never be as great again though. Its been noticeable change since the company stopped being run by its founding engineers. The passion isn't there, and never will return.

That's what happens when beancounters take over from engineers. No offense to accountants or finance people, but at least in the car business, most don't seem to have the soul of engineers. Certainly not of Soichiro Honda. |

Even the bean counters are not to blame. The buying public is! The company will make what sells. They don't randomly decide to drop models or levels but put a pile of time and money into determining what will keep the company afloat. A tiny portion of the buying public that want a certain car just are not enough to keep producing it. They simply are not a charity that can continue to built whatever they are passionate about.

I have a hard time trusting any article that references Fast and Furious multiple times and gets the horsepower rating of the original car wrong.

Imagine a country in which every household was made up up of skilled drivers, finish your mandatory advanced driving course (with ease because your parents weren't a bunch of rotten apples and had you go karting since you were in pre-school), finish high school, start your first job (there wasn't time for this during school as your local autocross scene kept you busy), and then get your first car a new Gen 2 Toybaru Twin - which gets heavily used daily on the speed limit free highways. Joking aside if cars weren't so much viewed as status symbols, we wouldn't have such an arms race of who can make the most powerful and expensive SUV (most of the time), with lower priced sports cars heading for extinction as the power arms race in sports (which is useless on public roads) also pushing them that way. Add to that all the emission laws coming into play in the next 10 - 15 years and I'm so glad that cars like the MX-5 and Twins exist. If there is something like another S2000 that would be cool, I mean how bad do you have to F-up a sports car with what by all accounts is a great engine in the CTR. |

This fact alone plays a bigger part than all the rest put together and so many people like to just dismiss it off hand. There are worldwide agreements in place that dictate very strongly what can and ca not be done. One of these is the manufacturers fleet carbon credits. They have X number of credits that they can spread across the whole fleet of cars they make. It can completely rule their business decisions simply by forcing them to give up one thing in order to exceed the thresholds on another. If I am Toyota and I have to choose between a bigger better engine in a limited run sportscar or pumping out a bunch more high value Tacoma trucks I know where I am going to send my credits! There is also big money to be made in buying and selling these credits across manufactures. So I can build a limited run of sportscars and make $1 million or I can drop the cars and sell those credits for $4 million. Again it is an obvious business win. They are businesses after all.
