Concerning shift
So I've had my AT FR-S for about a year, it's always had a pretty hard shift in my opinion compared to other cars I've had but today I happened to forget it was in "paddle shifter" mode and before I could shift it on my own from 1st to 2nd it did it by itself, but shifted extremely hard (threw me forward in my seat pretty much) I drove for about another hour or so that day and it seemed like nothing was really different, but that hard shift kinda concerned me considering I never experienced it before, and I was wondering if anyone could explain to me why that happened
This might be a noob question but I haven't been driving very long and couldn't quite find a similar situation someone has had online from my searches. Also if this is something out of the ordinary, some background: it is coming up on 100,000 miles soon and i haven't done much maintenance yet other than the regular oil changes. |

If the AT fluid hasn't been changed, I'd suggest you go with @Ashikabi 's suggestion and have the fluid changed. |

If the transmission was in first and went very swiftly into second before the engine rpms could go down quick enough and match, that would cause a forward lurch when the trans and engine engaged, right?
OP I wouldn't worry about any lasting damage. These transmissions seem to be able to take a beating on stock power. I've made enough terrible shifts I'm surprised I haven't shattered my clutch yet (granted it's manual and you're rocking auto). Sounds like you need to swap fluids though. |

Could also be exactly what you said, driver expected to be pushed back and prepared for that, but it came a fraction of a second late. |

OP sounds like has a few years of previous owner history he can't account for. I was dding an auto 86 for a few years and I do not remember any shifts being hard, just typical smooth torque converter engagement every time. Hard shifts should not be normal for the AT.. Technically the AT fluid should've been changed 40,000 miles ago so should start with that.

Another possibility
Could it be that the rev limiter kicked in?

Ah I see. My brain has the hardest time visualizing what would cause forward vs backward lurching.
