Who is autocrossing a widebody build?
Looking for more information on this, logic is simply looking for maximum tread then widebody should be the best route. Also curious as to how people have their cars setup.
Would really appreciate anyone currently or previously racing w/ their widebody (any are interesting but rb v3 has me the most curious w/ how wide the rear fenders are) as well as any relevant build threads etc |

I can't imagine this being very helpful, and going widebody would immediately put you into street modified class (SCCA Solo Rules 2019 16.1.H). Given the fact you're asking this question, I don't see you being remotely competitive in this class.

Autocross isn't about maximum tread, it's about best compound and size for autocross. Not the same thing at all.

Being wider means you have to travel a lot further around the course. A lot of cars actually use more offset to make their track width narrower and therefore travel less distance between start and finish.

its fast, reliable and consistant. I fall within a half second of those times with a 18x8 225 Kumho V720 it is NOT about tire width, but about how you control the car with what you have. as far as autox-ing a widebody You wont be competative in classing, but dont class! Just run X- class for PAX time. Come on out and see whats what. Too many stodgy guys get grumpy with an "improperly set up" car. but the truth is we need new people to keep funding the sport. and Honestly If you come out and run laps and dont care about winning a class. Then what should we care? If you are ever in Region 57 Look up Number 400 in STX The Street Touring group is tight knit and even goes so far as playing with the STU guys as well. ( still cant hold a stick to Brian Goodwin, dude is a legend in CS right now) |

Autocross is in trouble because it is pricing itself out of its market. It is getting too expensive, and people are comparing cost vs actual amount of time they get to run and deciding it is not worth it at all. Prices used to be reasonable, but they are just too high now for what you get. |

There's some who think the 86 could do well in DSP against the RX8's (street prepared allows cutting of fenders and flaring to fit tires), nobody has bothered to cut one up yet. The last dominant DSP car was an E46 330ci on 18x11" wheels running 315/30/18 Hoosier A7's, that car had 235hp stock and owner claimed 250whp when selling, he is now developing an RX8 with an engine swap for SM. DSP is just bolt on power mods, so you're not getting much better than E85, tune, header, if you wanna go nuts SM is the place to go, engine swaps, FI, the limit is how much power you can actually get to the ground.
@whataboutbob is the only person I know who's put effort into making an FRS as fast as possible for autox, it's not a full SM build but he's got a supercharger and 9.5" wheels and is running Hoosiers last I checked, looks like he still hasn't cut the fenders and is spending more time developing aero as he's gotten more interested in track stuff. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25212 https://www.instagram.com/robert_stangarone/ imho sure go widebody, buy a set of 11" wheels and 315 Hoosiers You could save a few bucks and probably have a lot of fun on 295's on 10" wheels if you don't care about being totally competitive, step down another level to 275's on 9's which you might not need to widebody for. Should be a ton of fun! There's an off chance you can't get the NA power to really make use of 315's/11s like the heavier E46 could, idk anyone running an RX8 for that class but you'd probably be ok copying their widths to start with. ok newb advice because you're asking questions seasoned autoxers don't ask: if you want to go as fast as possible you don't need to flare the fenders yet, buy the standard 17x9 wheels and slap on some 245 Hoosier A7's, make sure you have enough camber to not waste them and go from there. If you want to be competitive start looking at STX builds, lots of fun to be had there. Last edited by strat61caster; 06-30-2019 at 08:38 PM. |

And insurance for the sport has climbed so much. And as we are getting lower and lower attendance the cost keeps rising to keep the sport going not tomention in San diego we are running out of parking lots to use. No one wants us there even though its good money. With the chargers leaving the stadium has become decrepid |

Huh you're right, for some reason I thought they got moved not long after the RX8 did, oh well rest of my post isn't far off aside from that.

Are you with the SCCA? The insurance/sanction costs haven't changed a lot in recent years. However, lot rent has gotten out of hand. We had one venue go up 40% in one year. We did some funky agreements to get it to work, but had to move on from using the venue due to rent/lot condition. Thankfully we have a couple decent venues left, but it sucks as we have the whole state of ND but only have 3 venues |

This exactly. The upside is that you can just go ahead an make pretty much any mod you feel like and run whatever tires you prefer. You won't be competitive, but who cares, just have fun. Half of the cars at local events are like this. If you do want to be competitive, SSC or STX are your best bet. |
