What Mike said.
Learn to handle your car on a skidpan first, properly.
Then venture onto a racetrack, with great care.

Then you'll learn a lot that you didn't know.
And you'll thank the folks who advised you how to do that while keeping your car in one piece.

Enjoy!!

Speed Ventures regularly does Autocross at Auto Club Speedway. That has been the most convenient way for me to practice car control at the limits. The nearest accessible skid pad would probably be the Balcony at Willow Springs. The Slide Factory regularly puts on drift clinics up there (one coming up May 3), but I haven't personally tried it yet.

It would be nice to have a wet skid pad, or some sort of polished concrete to practice on. The Porsche Experience Center in LA has some nice venues, but obviously not open to your own car and expensive to do with theirs. There is a police training center (Emergency Vehicle Operations Center, EVOC) in San Bernardino that has some venues, so I have always been curious to figure out if you could rent it somehow, but I haven't investigated.
