It's doubtful it will make any difference. Stop worrying about it. It's fooked. What's left is haggling over the settlement.
By the way: Quote:
Georgia is a TLF state. If Progressive is telling you 80%, that's just a number they're using as a general guide, not the state rule. Scrap value is still pretty high on these cars, and the cost to repair that damage would be costly. So even if the damage doesn't come up to 80% of the total value, they'll still end up totaling it because the cost of the repairs plus the scrap value will exceed the value of the car. In the off chance they try to tell you they can't total it because it doesn't reach 80%, push back. But that's unlikely to happen. Progressive's marketing schtick includes fast claims processing, which means they put an emphasis on moving them on through. An adjuster whose performance is evaluated on the speed of his claims processing has an incentive to total it, because that's the fastest way to get rid of the claim. In contrast, repairing that will drag it out for weeks. And it isn't his money the company will be spending. Last edited by extrashaky; 02-20-2018 at 12:12 AM. |

Sorry to hear about your accident, glad everyone is ok. That trunk gap and the fact that it pulls indicates some structural damage, that coupled with the airbag deployment makes me think it will be totaled.

Update: I sent the pictures and videos to the insurance agent that has been assigned to my claim. She forwarded them to their total loss department and they aren't sure if it's going to be a total loss. So instead of having the car picked up tomorrow to be sent to their yard, it's being sent to a shop that I've chosen. It's a good body shop with ~150 review on Google average ~4.5 stars out of 5. They'll be doing a teardown there to see the extent of internal damage, if any. An adjuster will then be sent out to give a final determination, as far as I understand. I've made sure to express my concern to my agent regarding the repairs and how safe the car will be, etc. She has been receptive and told me that I can have that conversation with the adjuster if it comes down to that. I'm not just going to accept the car being repaired. It'll never be the same.
And @extrashaky, what do you think the actual cash value of the car is? Cost of repairs? Salvage value? Let's say SV = 6,000, CoR = 7,000, ACV = 13,000 and Progressive's TLF uses 75% (6,000 * .75) + 7,000 = 14,000 > 13,000 = Total Loss. That's cutting it close. I don't know how accurate I am with my CoR and SV, but I'm pretty comfortable with 75% and 13,000 for the ACV (calculated by average the trade-in value and the retail value). Thoughts? |

Also, your math is weird. By weird I mean wrong. But don't sweat over it, because you're not going to be able to estimate the cost of repair yourself. Notice I'm not giving a number, because beyond a few thousand dollars in airbag replacement cost, the cost of a door and several thousand dollars of welding and painting, I'm not sure what else is bent underneath. You said it was pulling to the right, which implies additional hidden damage. Just wait for the estimate. There's nothing you can do about it until then, so stop worrying about it. |

It won't take much to add up to $7K. My little fender bender last year that looked like a scratch on the bumper cover was almost $2k by itself. You can see the details in my owner's journal, but the photos of the damage are in post 411
Definitely gather any information you have on repairs in the last 12 months, and any upgrades you did. When my son's '98 Volvo was totaled we got another $500 or so for repairs we could document that had been made during the last year. The insurance company most likely won't ask but if you bring it up they should cover it.

Also, do not take their first offer. Take your time settling. Seriously look at the vehicles they try to show you as comparables too. Last time I went through this the comparable vehicles weren't in my market, nor were they within 6 months of the loss date. Insurance definitely tries to steal every vehicle they can.

It's fun to guess based on photos but what's important is what the adjuster finds and reports.

Yep. Not only can we just what is in the pics and nothing else but even that can be deceiving. What looks great from one angle may be way off from another. We also tend to think in terms of what would happen in our region and forget that others have different requirements and regulations. A car that may be an instant write off in California may be totally repairable a few miles away in Oregon.
